Stupid question:
What is the purpose of springs on the trimil exhaust (aside from holding the collector on) |

I always thought they were for performing quick changes between cop-friendly QP stingers and open baffle 2nd trimester labor-causers. _________________

I assumed it was for swapping exiting exhaust pipes and when not in use to put a cap over it if you had a stinger pipe. Just guessing |

Hitest, the average owner of a 1967 and earlier modle has usually gained more experience in rust restoration.
He also suffers from the illusion that his cheaply made little 1967 and older model is somehow superior to all the cheaply made little 1968 and later models.
Of course, 1968 and up owners can always reclaim their self esteem by calling to mind the Yugo.
So it's all good!

Fight time!!! This bad little creation (in the process of being lowered and having the rear fenders widened) was an awesome autocross car!!
Oh, wait... I did sell it and buy bugs. Never mind, fight canceled. Hmm, but both are '68 and up style... Now I'm just confused, I know I'm suppose tone offended but I'm not sure how! _________________ MAGIC SMOKE. The mysterious internal component of all electrical parts that allows them to work. Do you suppose the counterweight-effect of those exhausts cracked too many welded flanges? Perhaps a slip joint and springs were more a repair that just became regular. I'm regular, in case anyone wanted to know.
Nice Yugo- It looks great with Magnum PI's wheels. _________________

When installing rear torsion bars into the housing, is there a way to sync. them as to where they are the same?
Mine have a letter stamped into them and then a single hole stamped into the end.

Yes,
get yourself an angle finder so you can install them both at the same angle instead of just guessing and ending up with different heights.

I found my angle finder in the $5 tool bin at my local parts store. That was as cheap as Harbor Freight, and the nearest HF store is about 120 miles from here. |

Sears sells a angle finder that is really high quality and cheap price
Hitest. Good comment on the leverage the exhaust would put on the weld
It's official. That is the reason they have springs |

That, and when you consider the intended use of those engines, usually in Baja bugs and off road racers, and the pounding the suspension took. I'm thinking it also absorbed the transmitted shock to the engine and exhaust. I had one of those exhausts and never even gave it any thought! _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Johnnypan have you ever read the book Thinking Small the long, strange trip of the Volkswagon Beetle, by Andrea Hiott? Good book in regards to the history of the VW Beetle and I completely agree with you with Heinrich Nordhoff. If it wasn't for Hitlers war machine and extra funds it would have been interesting to see the history of the beetle then.

johnnypan used 1 of those a couple weeks ago and it only took that idiot 3 tries over 2 days to get it close to being even . |

4 tries, get it right jackass.. ...you'll find using original torsion bars that hitting the proper height is a matter of trial and error..the Bentley called for a 20 degree angle spring plate with the door frame level..I ended up at 24 and 24 and !/2 degrees to get the proper look and stance..going a degree at a time till right..even the spline chart didnt relate, the bars fatigue over time, rendering a one time set up out of the question |

Nice to know that a person might have to differ side to side to compensate for worn parts |

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=591981&sid=bdceab22bd9ef5371a8da7605c7fbeac
A few hits, but no suggestions yet...
Thanks!
