|

Good evening to all could you explain me how to install the parcel shelf?
It is difficult to fit in the right place under the steering wheel...do you have some photos or a guide to mount it?
Best regards
Lorenzo

You're right...it is difficult. Just took mine out a few months ago and put it back in a day later, so I knew how it went in. It was still a "forced" fit...not an easy one. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

So don't you have to remove the speedometer cover to replace the parcel shelf? Do you have a guide on a workshop Manual? |

You mean the package tray under the dashboard, right?
Sometimes you have to pull on the wheel a little to bring the column back to get the bolt holes to line up for the steering column mount.
Make sure your speedometer cable is already slid through the hole before installing it.
Here's a photo from underneath of my '61, if this helps at all:

I think he means to say that you have to remove the speedometer "cable" (not cover) to fully remove the dash tray. Yes, you need to disconnect the upper end of the cable from the back of the speedometer, then disconnect the other end of the cable from the driver side wheel dust/grease cover, pull the cable thru the front suspension, through the floor and up through the tray to get the dash tray out of the Bus completely. Then remember to first oil or re-lubricate that cable, then install it through the hole in the tray, feed the cable down through the floor, through the suspension and back into the left wheel spindle and attach it through the grease/dust cover. Attach the upper end to the back of the speedometer and finish installing the dash tray into position.

Hmmmm...when he said headlight cover, I thought he meant the binnacle... The dash section around the headlight. I didn't think he meant the cable because I don't think he's removing the shelf...he's trying to install one. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Has anyone ever perpetrated the sacrilege of drilling a bigger hole in the parcel shelf so they can feed the upper end of the speedo cable through it? It would save a ton of hassle given the number of times I've had that shelf out. The problem, of course, is that the retaining nut on the speedo end of the cable won't fit through the factory hole. So far I just lower the shelf down to the floor with cable still fed through it, but it's always in the way and makes it even harder to crawl around in that cramped space. I know, I know ... taking a drill to factory metal. but oh so tempting ... Anyone gonna fess up to their sins?? |

That's exactly what I did. Well...almost. That area of my shelf was badly rusted. I patched it with a piece that I made sure had a large enough hole for the cable and cap. I then fitted that large hole with a split grommet that hugs the cable tightly, keeping shelf items from falling though the hole. Easy to pop out the grommet if needed to remove the cable if needed. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Lorenzo,
Was this parcel shelf previously installed in this bus? If it is new, could it be for a different year bus? If you try to install a late thick-edged parcel shelf into an early bus, the edge can make it difficult to get mounted correctly.

Good morning to all, sorry if i answer now but i live in Italy and we have a different fuse so i went to sleep...thank you for all your answers!!!
My parcel Shelf under the dash board was previously installed, wrongly installed because the mechanic put it without pushing in the right way under the steering wheel...yesterday i removed it and installed the wiper Arm Assembly and when i tried to refit the parcel shelf i understood why the mechanic didn't put correctly, it is because it's hard to fit....and i could't put it me too... |

Accident damage, pehaps? That will mess up the dimensions of the nose and make the shelf a challenge to install. It is bad enough on an undamaged bus. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon
