That's just a standard trunk mount rack. Any bike store will carry one.
Personally i'd remove the wheels and put the bike in the back seat. I'd be afraid of the bike weight damaging the decklid. _________________ Glenn

Even more of a reason to have it inside. All you need is someone to rearend you and not only do you loose your engine but the bike.
I always transport my bike inside the car.

Would a roof mount rack be out of the question? I frequent the beach quite often in the summer time with the family and I'm considering both roof rack for 2 bikes plus a bike rack on the rear. I'd most likely put my Giant TCR2 on the rear plus my kid's bike (he's 6, it's light) but my wife rides a beach cruiser and my 17 year old rides a fixie that would most likely go on the roof due to the weight. Sometimes it's good to have the Yukon Denali in the driveway for instances like that but the bug just has that cool factory _________________ 69 bug 1600sp buckpack ceramic header w mondo muffler, riviera wheels, 185/65 front 205/70 rear, dual baby webers, big stereo in the works.

I'd personally recommend a roof type system over a rear mounted system any day, mainly for the stability factor. I currently run a Yakima system, which has now been on three of my cars, and most recently on my current Bug.

I paid 179 for the rack and about 15-20 bucks a piece for the brackets to hold the front forks.
I usually have two bikes on it and use bungie cord to stop the back tires from hopping around. But if you have a ton of $$$$$$$$ in your bike and want the added safety and security go ahead and pay for the Yakima.

You can usually find a thule or yakima on eBay used for similar money. Good quality that will have lots of versatility. _________________ Ace

If you want something cheap and easy go with a rear/trunk mount rack like previously suggested. Thule, Yakima and Saris make them with the Saris Bones 2 or Bones 3 being the most popular. Craigslist will be littered with them. I strap an old Thule rack on the back of my 1970.
Funny...I thought I was the only guy who has a road bike worth more than the car it is transported on (2011 Madone 6 w/sram red & carbon wheels).
(Also, if you take a short bungee cord and hook it from one pedal around the front rim and back to the other pedal (making a “V” shape) it will keep your front wheel and pedals from bouncing all around). I also take another and connect it from the pedal to the rack otherwise the bike will tilt/fly due to wind.
If you like the functionality of a roof rack you can spend lots and get the Yakima roof system. Their website has the option to build a roof option for a 1979 VW Bug, which is same as it relates to the roof. Specifically, it is the “1A Raingutter” mount at $175 and 48” CrossBars at $89 (I believe you can cut down the CrossBars since 48” is probably a little too wide for a Beetle). After you have that base system you can add whatever Yakima bike rack you want and locks if you choose. Then you can add all sorts of accessories for transport like a cargo box, canoe rack or ski rack. |

Yea dude, don't even mess around... Just get a good roof rack to keep your bike and your hood safe and secure! You can use the rack to put other junk on too. _________________ Stock'ish 1968 Beetle |

What should I be looking for when searching for a used roof rack? As far as model and sizing go? Can i just get any Yakima or Thule and it will fit on my 76 standard beetel?
Specifics to help me in my search please. _________________ -74 Standard - "CaliBug" 2084T, MS3X w/FI and Crank Fire

You need the raingutter mount, the Yakima 1A towers. It was actually mentioned a couple times in this thread.
Thule also has a raingutter series, though I've heard some mention they also need the highrise adapter. |

I purchased the Allen Sports Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack through Amazon earlier this month.
http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Sports-Deluxe-2-Bike-T...+bike+rack
I don't remember which post it was in, but someone said that they had ordered the rack and were using it. There was even a photo of the red beetle with the rack on the back.
So I ordered it. I haven't used it yet. But I held it up against the back of my bug and it looks like it will do the job just fine. _________________ 1969 VW Beetle Convertible |

Hah, yes. That was mine.
The red bug in question:
For occasional use that Allen is fine, I'm finalizing a receiver mount that'll allow me to use a standard hitch bike rack. (Pics here).
Trunk mount (well, I guess hood mount here?) means no access to the engine compartment while it's on, that's the main reason for my switch (I carry my bike frequently but the car is still fairly new to me, so I've been trying to keep an eye on how its running).
So there are a few options, but most here seem to prefer the roof rack. |

Thank you Windfish. I was trying to remember to thank you for the post about the bike rack. I plan on only using it occasionally. We have a Thule receiver hitch bike rack for our Honda Odyssey that we use on a regular basis. But once in a while, I want to just go by myself.
Or, my foreign car repair shop is within an easy bike from from work. So I could take the car in the morning, hop on the bike to work, and return to pick up the car later.
And while a roof rack would be more stable and allow for easy engine access, I am not supposed to lift anything heavy or over my head, so the roof rack is out. _________________ 1969 VW Beetle Convertible |

I got one of the Allen racks from Wal-Mart

to use on my 69 'vert. I have a restored Murray banana bike that I received for Christmas in 1966 that I take with me to car shows. Don't know which attracts more people, the VW or the bike! _________________ I'm not losing my hair, it's just retired and relocating further south.
