As I work through the interior of my 72 Kombi I find that it is difficult to determine what is original and what is missing. Via the many previous owners and their creative ideas they have left many holes. The ones that are threaded are obviously factory designed, but I am unsure what belongs there. Other holes are not as clear if VW created them or a previous owner. Nonetheless, because of the Kombi's "rareness" or the many that have been significantly altered. I find it difficult (either through the Gallery or the Classifieds) to find any good pics of their original interiors.

Does anyone know of a good source for pics of original Kombi interiors?

North American market Kombi's came standard with a padded dash with glovebox lid, padded walkthrough, opening front vent windows and a few other safety and convenience features that were optional elsewhere, the single color paint and beige or grey painted interior in the back with no headliner as well as no fresh air vents in the bulkheads say Kombi to me.

When did they start painting the interior behind the passenger and driver?
My 1973 Kombi/Sportsmobile is grey primer in the back just like my 1961 Splitwindow Kombi....

That's a rare combo kombi with the green inside. Mine is a 78 and it is all grey inside so not sure when they first did the inside color paint but they did the grey up to 78 for sure.

I don't know when they started painting the interior grey but I'll assume early 50's, the interior color for commercials changed in 70 from grey to beige (can't recall the codes right now).
Maybe that green bus is a 79 and like many other production cost cutting measures implemented over the years they quit painting them beige inside? Usually the only models with body color inside say "prepared for Westfalia" or "special paint for Westfalia"on the M plate.

Looks like beige up in the roof and on the side panel beside the rear seat and hatshelf from here, the grey is really grey like primer.

The coating-primer in my 76 panel is more like a off white - beige. Not a gray prime color.

Interesting. My '78 is bright orange from top to bottom, inside and out! No headliner in back at the moment.

And a real Kombi?, lets see some pics as well as the M plate or at least the production date, maybe VW stopped painting the insides later in 78?

.........trying to think of where I've seen a 79 Kombi or panel and who had it now.......wondering what the insides look like............ Confused Maybe they are getting rare afterall?

I'm not doubting you, just curious if there's a production detail we've missed. Wink

My US delivery late '71 Kombi is beige inside behind the bulkhead. OG exterior color was Pastelweiss. Padded dash, glovebox cover. Walk-through, sold originally with just the rear seat as much as I can tell.

Kombis are largely vanished because they are LOUD AS FUCK going down the highway. A fella's not going to keep his happy truck if his woman won't ride in it.

Here's the highway setup, Kombi-style:

I've understood the Kombi to be a 1 ton vehicle, and have made dump runs with it exceeding that same ton per the certified scales.
