I'm just going to buy a 10 x 20 tarp and drape it over the top and stake down the corners with rope |

Well...
The day started fair, windy but fair. Was nice and sunny when I got here just past noon.
However, as it "progressed" the clouds began to show up. Wind was getting more aggressive. I staked my huge canopy, strapped it to the trailer and also tied up some more weight to it. There were but 4 to 5 buses and we were wondering if some just "shyed" out due to the weather. Eventually some more started showing up. Randee had just gotten in and barely started setting up his camp when his girlfriend's daughter broke her wrist at the playground! Bad enough that the paramedics had to show up and take her to the hospital!
By the time they left, the sun wasn't helping any and the wind was getting past cold, so I fired up the turbopot. Though it turned out not as " spectacular" as I had hoped, everyone did huddled up to it as it was the only heat in town! Due to the same wind that kept it subdued, they would not allow any kind of wood fire.
Then around 10 pm it started sprinkling. I left Rachel in charge of the pot and went to bed. Later on it really started to rain. Hard! And as if it wasn't bad enough the wind decided it need to blow harder even! Though I " kept on eye on it", my canopy just could not handle it and it did buckled. However, with the condition outside, I wasn't about to care for it. Anyway, when it finally stop " raining", it then turn to sleet!
Matter'O'factly, I am sitting in the Dormy writing this after surveying the damage and fixing me some " wet" coffee. It is still cold and the wind just never let off. Will try to totally take down the canopy without having it take me on a flight.

Dude you all are tough as nails!
As for myself. Unproven new engine, registration out of date and minimal camping supplies = a no go for me. Sorry guys, I really, really was looking forward to this trip.

Tristan and I drove up this morning about 8:15 planning to camp tonight but when we hit Green Valley campground it was raining then a bit later snowing. The only person we saw out and about at KQ was Slayer and then Serg, everyone else was either packed into one of the Helites or Serg and Maria's nice warm cabin with Maria feeding all the hanger's on (thanks Maria!). We all hung out talking VWs and whatnot and every now and then the sun would pop out and we would rush out hoping it was there to stay, but it wasn't. Instead it was off and one snow-sleet-rain-hail repeat until mid afternoon when it starte to let up, but the forecast called for more so quite a few of us buggered out. Next year we will plan this for mid-May when the weather is a little less iffy. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Thanks Paul. It's actually not so bad, we've been having a blast despite the weather. Some of us toughed it out and stayed as planned. They don't call us CamPbodians for nothing, pass the whiskey. _________________ Phil 4:13 |

I'll tell you what, I learned a TON on how to camp with a VW bus! My tent I set up did not hold up to that wind and rain and it flooded out within an hour of the storm starting. We ended up cramming into the bus, which is not a camper, for the rest of the night. It was cold, but at least we were dry. In the morning I found that the tent was still there, but had two inches of water in the bottom of it...
I took some pics of other buses and plan on using them for ideas, i.e. bring a portable generator for lights and a heater.
It was fun while it lasted and my kids saw snow for the first time! Thanks for the good time and look forward to next year. By the way, where were the T-shirts? |

lessons learned could include a tent without a floor, and the need for a dormobile top allowing you to stand up occasionally. those little honda gnerators run all night on a tank of gas and are super quiet, absolutely worth the money. I go camping 10 weekends out of the year, get a cheap propane cooker setup, like the ones that bass pro shop sells for turkey friers, makes coffee in no time _________________ regards

Since the "Cruise" portion of the event didn't happen because of the weather, I am thinking about organizing a cruise along the planned route in late June since May and early June are pretty busy with VW relate events. I was thinking we could meet up in Descanso and then head north on the dirt road up to Julian where there are a couple microbreweries for beers and lunch and then call it a day. Anyone interested? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

We survived the KQ Ranch campout. Yeah we Had to deal with some mild/extreme weather but thats camping. Everyone That I talked to we're still in high spirits and had fun. The picture above shows me and the rest of the people that chose to stay the second night. I had a blast. Thanks for letting me join the trip this year.

We'll be gone 2 of the 4 weekends in June but if we are around that route is a great way to cruise to Julian. _________________ Larry in OB

This year was a challenge for sure. It was fun while it lasted though. Here is what I woke up to Saturday morning. That is after listening to wind rock my bus.
(up to 65mph winds) hail and pounding rain all night long.
.
It didn't get much better until about three in the afternoon and forecast called for more of the same. So I decided me and my bus had enough and pulled out right after Dan and Pyro did. This trip did reconfirm to me that replacing all my window rubbers is a must now! From bulk wall back my bus stayed pretty dry. But the front took a pounding. There was about an inch of water in my tray and ruined my Ipod .
On a lighter note Its always fun seeing everyone and I'd have to say thanks to Sergio and Marie for setting this up at KQ Ranch, and the food Marie feed us was the bomb! _________________
