Instead of creating old school wiki threads...can we have someone aggregate tires and wheel info into a selector guide?
A single point of truth would be nice...that was pages and pages long. _________________ #leftlanelife |

Anybody actually run the Hercules Power CV or Nexen tires listed on the first page? The Hercules have a couple sizes that interest me and the prices are good, but have zero experience with that brand. I picked up some 16x7 rims and want to find some tires that are slightly larger in diameter than the 205/70R14 that are on there now. It's a Carat with a 2.2 Subie so don't want anything huge. I was thinking 195/65R16 or 205/65r16. _________________ 1988 GL Camper

I'm running the Herc 195/14's. 65# tire. I use ~42 fr, ~48 rr and all is well.
They can seem a little hard when cold. Remind me of the Bridgstone 603's.
Road noise depends on paving surface but they are pretty quiet.
Not many miles on them and its been mostly pavement
I'd buy them again _________________ Peace, Regis |

Follow on questions after much searching through the forum. For a Carat what is the largest tire that won't rub? There seems to be contradictory information / opinion. I've seen some say a 225/60r16, which is 26.6 in dia works, but others say they had rubbing with smaller diameter. Will a 205/65r16 tire rub on a Carat with stock springs on 16x7 ET31 rims? They are 26.5 in diameter. I was also thinking about 195/65r16, but can't seem to confirm if they would fit the 7" rim. _________________ 1988 GL Camper

The Hercules tires here are free UPS ground shipping, to my address at least. It did take about 2 weeks for them to come, though.

I found a set of Ronal R9 rims for sale. I'm a total sucker for that rim on a Syncro. I've wanted a set for over ten years. Finally, set available, right price and I had cash, done. Point being they were wrapped in Hercules Terra Trac rubber. I looked up the tire saw they were inexpensive and thought oh well we will see. Cost of the rims were right and the tires almost free, new 225/70R15. I've only put a few thousand miles on them, but they seem to be fine. Colorado snow and some dirt roads are the only test they have had. Not the greatest snow tire ever, still a useful tire. |

Just noticed that Continental has a tire "developed especially for vehicles with a high balance point and transporting heavy loads." States that it has a new stiff sidewall. Didn't see it on the list on page 1.
http://www.continentaltire.com/www/tires_us_en/the...tml?page=3
Comes in a size 205/65R15 and 215/65R15 with 805 and 802 revs/mile and 102/100 load index and max inflation of 50/51 psi.
They also have 215/60R16 with 799 revs/mile which would work great on my 16 inch rims. Load index 99, max inflation 51 psi. _________________ 1988 GL Camper

Here is the e-mail I got from Hankook. Maybe it's a Canadian thing. Perhaps old stock is still available, but I can't figure out why they would lie to me.

Hi Mr. Juan!
I’m sorry to tell you these tires are discontinued now and we have a size that could fit which is a 185-75R14 in the Optimo H724 but those tires are not extra load rated so it could not be the best application for a Westfalia. Their load index is 89 and speed rate S. so it mean that those tires are built to resist up to 1290lbs per tire car weight ( 5160lbs total empty dry vehicle ). That been said the optimo H724 is more suitable for basic car than a mini camping bus.
For more question let me know!

Since there is conflicting info, I emailed Hankook's USA division regarding the status of RA08 and just received this response:
Hi Kam:
You were misinformed. That tire is still in production with plenty of stock in our warehouse.
Sincerely,

So, it must be a Canadian thing. I'll amend the "discontinued" note in the main post. _________________ ~Kamz

That Hercules Terra Trac AT tread looks like the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo. The smallest size the Terra Trac has is the 215/70-16 which would fit fine on a syncro. You have to search outside this thread to find opinions and recommendations, this just lists what fits which is very helpful not getting cluttered with arguments.
I just did a quick search and found an old review, not sure if the tire changed much since 2006 but they liked it. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/2915...w-style%29
The details on the 14" tire I mentioned above is the Hercules Power C/V. 195R14C/8 106/104Q semi aggressive looking tread. See the link above for details. They have that in smaller 15 & 16 tire too for people who want to stay near stock size. |

I can't see a max PSI on these 225 70r14 Mastercraft Courser A/T2's |
Cooper/Mastercraft lists that tire as "standard" load range.
Tire Rack load range chart said standard is 35 p.s.i.
I would not run 1764 lbs per tire at 35p.s.i.

I have 12 of the 14" Nexans on my 3 Vanagons and 2 more new spares all bought for well under a hundo each mounted and balanced. Most recently put 4 of them on a Doka that came from Canada and forgot how much better they feel than the passenger tires the Doka came with.
We had the tires that came with it on for the entire engine rebuild and the associated test drives around town and when I put the Nexans on the first corner I took I was amazed at the difference in the stiffer sidewalls.
Also towed one of the vans behind the RV from FL to PA last August and the tires did great on that trip too.
Nothing but good things to say about those tires so far from me! |

Anyone have recommendations for a tire that performs well in mud? I'm sick of getting my current van (a chevy conversion van) stuck in puddles!
I have an 84 2WD Westy in insyncro's shop that I'd love to keep from getting stuck on the climber roads I plan to take it down. In the 15" tire thread it was mentioned that the BFG All-terrains perform well in dirt, but only average in mud or sand. I'm wondering about the Nokians, the All-terrain Yokohamas, or the various other options available.
I realize my van is no syncro, but it would be great to give it a fighting chance! |
