Just came back from Montreal with a stripped Syncro in tow. It towed great, I set the cruise control at 95kph, and 1500km later I still averaged 11l/100km, very happy with that. On the longest of hills through New Brunswick it dropped off to below 90kph. The 'new' van is a little rusty, no interior, it was a poptop weekender, no engine but came with a good tranny and complete syncro running gear. Good chance I''ll fix it. I have tons of parts to make it perfect.

This is at the Walmart campground somewhere in NB.

I'm glad you made it back safe and sound, and I'm very happy to have met you. I'm putting a list together (xmas in july type of thing) and look forward to doing business with you in the future! Very Happy

It was great to meet you too. Did you install your viscous coupling yet?

Hey there thanks for your reply re front hub before. I found one in Wa. state. How much do you think that van still weighed? 3000 lbs? I'm curious as I have a starcraft fishing boat and have thought about how well my syncro with a 2.5 suby would pull it. Need to refresh my memory on how much it weighs.

Your camper is set up right to haul like that, kudos.

Nothing better than having an extra Syncro around Wink
Have some fun with it.

Any chance you know your transmission case or fluid temp while towing?

That's a North Westy canvas. I love it!

That's actually my 3rd Syncro...
I didn't check the temp of the tranny, but I was under at one point to give it all a once over, and it was WAY cooler than the engine and the engine never exceeded 95c...I do have oiling plates, a reinforced gear carrier, and I opened the holes in the case so the oil can 'flow' everywhere in the box a bit better.
EGT spiked to 1200f once at the top of a very long hill, and cruising it was around 6-800f. VNT17/22 on a built AAZ. Liquid-Air charge cooler. No fan on a floor mounted rad.
Boost set conservatively at 16psi, not the usual 30 Very Happy

I'd be quite acurately guesstimating the Syncro was 2700lbs towing. I've driven lots of 2.5 Subaru Vanagons, mine feels about the same, maybe my diesel has a little better holding power on the hills. I'd say you wouldn't have any trouble on a short haul. It'll burn twice as much fuel though.

Dawes Device VNT controller. Works perfect. No linkage, just vacuum like an N75 valve. More than 20k on the set up. A little tricky to adjust at first but once it's dialled in, set it and forget it.
