Rocky Mountain Westy Twin Peaks Bumper Crop

Spent last weekend installing the rear bumper. Installation time was about 4-hours, mostly because the existing bumper-mount bolts (going into the frame-rails) were pretty stuck, and one of the bolts holding the chrome bumper on was a real beyatch to get a socket onto from the back.

The nylock nuts needed quite a deep socket to thread on, which took a bit of scrounging around in my oh-so-organized tool pile Rolling Eyes

Finished!

Good fit at the corners (not secured yet, need to drill NEW holes for mounting location Shocked ):

Rocky Mountain Westy Twin Peaks Bumper Crop (Part 2)

So this weekend was the front bumper install. I assumed it would be quicker, because no frame-rail nonsense. HAH! This turned out to be a real beyatch because of the optional brush-bar that I added to my order, which seemed to be about 1cm too short. We'll get to that later.

But I've got this thing which needs mounting! Confused

After much strenuous pushing and pulling, success!

However, the body mounts are off by at least 1cm Rolling Eyes

Quite happy with the new look - just need to get the four corners body-mounted.

So, there's still a few things on my list before I feel that I've really created a prerunner:
- rear flare install Rolling Eyes
- mud-flaps on four corners (got them, just hesitant to screw up the install with holes drilled into my body)
- Porsche 944 CVs for increased angle
- subaru 5MT transmission with Torque Biasing Differential, or just stick a Peloquin into my existing 091 tranny

But, even with these things not complete, I stepped it up and installed...
The Sticker!

When I quickly saw this pic, I thought your van was sitting on cardboard boxes Laughing

Great job with the photo documentation - that's a nice service to TheSamba community. They look great BTW, you must be psyched.

I did. Not happy with the shocks (Monroe's I think), and am waiting for T3technique and Christopher's new sway bar first, before I swap the shocks out...
What fogs are you mounting there? They look great!

I keep going back and forth on SA grill... Your combo does look sweet though!

Very psyched, although these mostly cosmetic things have got to stop, so I can move on to interior work! Procrastinator Embarassed

They are PIAA 6inch Fogs, with yellowish blue lenses. I must say that after all the lighting upgrades, there is a ton of light on the road, even with the fogs off. I would highly recommend the SA upgrade with relays and bulbs, the difference was amazing.

I am wavering about the lift. I think I am going with the syncro.org springs. They have a more mild lift, but retain the OE design, which I think will keep drive-ability and sway more manageable. I too am waiting for Chris's swaybar.

Dash Pull

Well, wouldn't you know it. I wanted to swap out my blower motor since it was erratic/squeeky on speeds 1&2. I'm also swapping the blower-motor resistor and control knob while in there by using a PWM motor-speed controller, and doing a fairly complicated stereo-install.

Got the idea for the PWM swap from this thread here on Samba:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=490528

Of course, I found a nasty surprise after pulling the dash:

Crap, time for a re-seal on the front windshield (at least)... Shocked Oh well, better to catch this now than when the paint is all bubbled and the sill is all rotten? Rolling Eyes

Here's the dash pulled, time for some cleaning:

Looks like the damned box has never been split?

Time to roll this thing over and tickle its blower-motor underbelly until it coughs up the goods!

Thanks mark, tempting. But I've never bled brakes before, not sure I'm up to it Sad
Same for doing my heater valve or clutch slave/master stuff while I'm in there, trying to limit my mistakes Wink
Wish you were here in pnw, I'd hire you (often). If you ever do a road trip and want a working holiday, let me know!

Replaced my broken digital clock with a multi-function blue LED display (to match my instrument-cluster LEDs). Results are in the outside-air-temperature thread (for now): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7091157#7091157

Managed to finally mount my terrapods and fog lights, as seen here.

The fog-lights look too wimpy, but they do add a bit of fill at the bottom. Better luck next time Rolling Eyes

Heater Fan Resistor replacement - via PWM

While my dash was out, i replaced my blower motor and resistor. Instead of just doing another resistor, I went with the PWM variable-speed motor controller approach instead, as documented here

I mounted it behind the wiring on driver's side:

The rotary knob (pot) looks like this:

I mounted it in the stock fan-speed control location (no pic).

Thanks danbar! My next posting was going to be the sub-woofer install (between front seats), but i managed to somehow fry my Alpine 5.1 surround processor in the process, and everything is yanked apart d'oh!

Subwoofer Between Seats

Here it is, thus freeing up space from under the bench-seat (where I had previously installed an Infinity BassLink self-amplified sub).

Excuse the wiring mess and lack of carpet.

And in other news - I might be selling Shocked, here's a link to the ad:
