I'm sure that at some point most of us here have made or modified a tool of some sort. I mostly just do it for the enjoyment and satisfaction of using something homemade or repurposed. Some may be from necessity or time restraints or for whatever reason. Thought I'd share a few of mine and hopefully others will do the same.

This is going to be a good topic.
Clutch breakaway tool to see at what FT. LB. the clutch is slipping. I use it on a dial torque wrench.

valve spring compressor
stretch gauge, didn't work as well as I had hoped
adapter to use a torque tool with a 1.5" gland nut
In the end I found that using a main bearing pin to space the end of the rod bolt out of the cap let me get a better measurement.
I love making stuff myself |

Don't give up on this one. You have a nice rigid frame there. Just need to do a little fine tuning. There is a small dimple on each end of the bolt that you need to seat into for it to work correctly. You might be getting some flex on the adjustable end. If not, check the tip on that side. It needs to fit and seat into the dimple. BTW I use mine with the dial end at the head of the bolt.

My home made tubing notcher.
the fish eye cut it made...
Fits nice without any grinding....
I've made three intakes with it so far and it does the job.

I built my own engine stand...
Adapter to mount VW engine on std stand...
English wheel...
modified HF bead roller...
quick release steering wheel adapter [somebody borrowed my idea and is selling them now]...
I have a test stand I have been working for awhile...
I have some more but no pictures of them. I made most of them while I was working for a metal shop running a water jet machine but they closed the doors and I am disabled now and I can barely get out of bed in the morning.

Great thread, a topic close to my heart.
I'm always building tools to do different jobs. For me this is half of the fun of restoration and the thing I get the biggest kick out of. Recently I've been getting into panel work, here's a few things I've made up in the past month or so.
Simple but necessary - spot weld drills made from normal twist drills - saves a fortune
A panel chisel for cutting and separating panels after drilling out the welds - just a heat treated bit of flat bar - heaps better then a big clumsy cold chisel.
Heat it up cherry
Quench it in oil (yeah I know - it should be clean oil but who wants to waste good oil on stuff like this)
Don't forget to hone the edge!
Tucking forks for shrinking metal.
Flange bending tool - an absolute necessity. I used to use an adjustable wrench but this is heaps better
(you also use it with a hammer to make a nice sharp edge)
Old hubs and wheels make a great tinmans stake stand - much better than mounting the stakes in a bench holder or in your vice as you can work at a nice comfortable height and easily move the panel around it.
it also makes a great stand for my bead roller - I cut the bottom off of an old stake I had spare. At some point I will also get around to making up some similar stands for my sand bags.
And now with an added hammer holder
There's heaps of other stuff that I don't have good photos for - slapping files, anvil stands, a jacking beam setup in my pit, a 3d printer. Will post some up if I can dig them out.
By far my favourite DIY tool is my CNC plasma cutter - designed and built by me mostly from scrap I had laying about the workshop.
The great thing about this is that it is now even easier to make other tools up.

I worked in a small prototype shop for a shortwhile learning to program&run cnc mills&other stuff.did mostly aerosapce&detroit car stuff,and some off the wall stuff along with tool&die.I wish I still had all that equip at my fingers.you can make just about any thing.the 3D programing was sweet.I miss realy using my brains for stuff like that.I never did get my own cnc machine hear at home like I had planed.that was the whole reason I went to work there for little over a year. shit happens.as does life....and now??? these darn lawn mowder powered cars in my way. |
