Van was base camp at aid station for 50k trail run today. A fun day!
ALMOST home, suddenly Alt & Oxy lights came on and I knew I had lost a belt.
Shut it down after about 20 seconds just as temp gauge was starting to go up.
Ran to the back, opened up hatch to see boiling in the pressure tank, spilling
from overflow tank, the whole messy deal.
Let it cool off while re-installing the belt. Snugged it up and hit the road again.
Temp was normal & van ran great for another 20 miles until home.
Topped off the overflow tank later - it was down to about the "min" mark.
(I usually keep it topped up to the "max" line.)
Question time:
Any thing I should be on the look out for after this incident?
Just looking for a heads up or any reassurance y'all can offer.
TIA...

Good job - sounds like you caught it in plenty of time to be safe. I would just be sure to check it each cold start to be sure its full before u turn the key. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

Always replace a thrown belt After u find the cause, usually some cords break and will either break or throw again. |

^^^ Great idea - cheap insurance.
In retrospect, it may have been giving me a clue it was stretching again: the
slightest little squeal when cold on startup. I was ignoring it because all the
belts were new just 2 years ago and I snugged 'em all several times the first
summer they were new and had never heard a peep for 2 years...
Lesson learned!
I'll be belt shopping @ FLAPS Monday! _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Sight down your pulleys and make sure everything aligns well. The alternator and alternator bracket are both pretty much overloaded and the alternator will skew over time causing problems with the belt. |

^^^ Already did this when I first opened the hatch - looks fine.
Installed the GW alt bracket helper a couple years ago, too.
Why else would a belt choose a particular moment to jump off?

Just the nature of the beasts. Used to happen pretty often, much less so with today's better manufacturing technology. |

worn and loose water pump bearings. but you'd notice that when you were messing with the belt. |

Mine's not...yet.
Thanks for the chatter, guys. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender
