I know this is a bit of an oddball topic, but I'm planning on putting some camper-y bits in my Syncro (stove, fridge, water, propane,
aux battery, etc). I understand it's easy to just pop Westy cabinets in, but I am not a huge fan of the weight or arrangement of the storage. When it warms up, I'll be making a detailed SketchUp model of the interior to plan my cabinets. I'm also imagining a potable water tank in the spare tire carrier and some other goodies.
But enough about my ideas, I want to see what you guys have done! From the simple to the elaborate, from modded Westy cabinets to fully custom setups, I would love to see what can be accomplished without an existing factory camper setup to build from. Campers from scratch! _________________ 1988 Vanagon Syncro EJ22 |

I looked at installing permanent cabinets, but I like the idea of removing the camping gear and putting the jump seat back in for day trips skiing, hauling kids, or lumber.
I put together this thing with everything sourced at Home Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond. It has an Olympian Wave 6 aux heater, 10lb propane tank secured inside behind the gray water tank, single burner stove on top for boiling water for coffee/oatmeal, sink, CO detector, extra fire extinguisher, and attached are 2 tray tables for the kiddos in the back bench seat. We stow the blue water jug when moving.
I do have a Country Homes pop-top, but I don't put it up if it's really cold and there's only 2 of us camping.
Mountain Smith storage cubes have been really handy, they fit perfect under the rear bench seat when the bed is folded out. Much more flexible than cabinets.

Nice! I like removable, the idea of being able to use it as a passenger vehicle when I have a crew of paraglider pilots and wings to shuttle around is appealing. I'm trying to figure out how I could lay down a wood floor but retain the mounts for the middle seat. _________________ 1988 Vanagon Syncro EJ22 |

I did a pergo floor and made a removable center section that I can take out to slide in the middle seat. _________________ Dave O

Well I have the westy crap in mine. No fridge and I will be hooking up the stove to a small bottle. The grand plan is to redo all of it in a nice wood with a blond stain and some embedded art. I am also running 17" BRM's lowered on Weitec springs.

This is my tin top camper. TF-49 and most of a camper interior. Sun roof has a full width bed so no water tank, new one under sink. We love it, have no need for a pop top. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Food and Utensils Storage, Engel Fridge.
I usually carry a milk crate with 2) 2.5 gallons of water that gets set outside when we camp. Coleman stove goes on a table outside.

Bump... there has to be more out there. I just tinted my windows, made more colorful curtains and made some thermal window covers. I'm really wanting to make all new cabinets/storage... I want more ideas and inspiration _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

Here's something a little different for ya... (white one in the back)
It's a 91 Transporter with a Tepui Ayer roof tent. Got a Bus Depot XL awning and rear add-a-room. Added 15amp shore power with a GoWesty hookup, GFCI outlet/2nd outlet w/USB hookups, and currently building a storage cabinet behind the driver's seat for cooking/cleaning on bottom/clother storage on top. Also has a passenger seat swivel and I'm working on a dual battery setup with isolator and a ProSport8 dual bank charger. Me and my lady sleep on the Zbed with a 2" foam topper and the yutes setup camp on the 2nd floor in the Ayer (which has a 3" mattress and is wired for 12V lights). Hope to have the cabinet finished by Natty Bus. Will take pics when it's done. _________________ 1964 Beetle |
