Not sure how to respond....so that feature kind of takes away some of the undeniable allure of being a fat guy?

Hell, I think it would look pretty good with a chopped standard Buggy windshield. Yea, it takes away a little from the original "look", but might be a bit more practical, especially getting it street legal here in the states.
American still makes the 10" wide Torque Thrust wheels for the rear (I think they were made custom at the time of the original - maybe even wider - to fit Indy car rubber for the "super wide" look).
I'm thinking it still needs a roll-bar, especially with all that dune dancing in the original movie!
Never tire of the sound of that Corvair 6!

I would think you could fit a nice late model EZ30 6 cylinder 3.0 Subaru and 5 speed for an "approvable" late model drivetrain (in most countries) and still have the wonderful sound and torque of the flat 6 engine. _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

Do it the way Steve McQueen and Pete Condos did, start with a Manx and do some fiberglass body work, its also the way Martin O'Connor made his http://www.corvairdunebuggy.com/ |

Some would describe Brice Meyers as being old at 88(?) but it doesn't hold him back. |

Soon after the Thomas Crown buggy was revealed in the movie, Universal Fiberglas in Scarborough, Ontario started producing Hunter Dune Buggy bodies which closely mimicked the Queen Manx design. In fact, the sketch and photos used in the marketing brochure were of the original Queen Manx, even though the end product incorporated an integral dash panel and a Manx-style windshield, rather than the marine-style shown. This allowed the dune buggy to be street-legal by not only accommodating DOT-approved safety glass, but the windshield wiper assembly from the donor car as well.
See http://hunterdunebuggy.com/ for more info and photos of mine.

The buggy Steve McQueen used in the Thomas Crown movie was a genuine Meyers Manx built/modified by Pete Condos shop. The Queen Manx was a second generation copy that Pete molded from the original. Pete had to use the name Queen Manx for his copies because he didn't have permission to use the McQueen or Thomas Crown name.
Bruce Meyers has built a new Thomas Crown replica Meyers Manx that will be at the Friends of Steve McQueen car show this Sunday in Chino.
