I have a completely restored 1957 bug (that I did not restore) with a hard pedal, poor stopping sickness. Trying to diagnose. Brakes adjusted properly. Have not removed drums but getting ready to explore. I have a new master cylinder B1-TVS1643A1 that I can not find fitment for. For starters does anyone know the difference between early masters through 57 and later 58-65 and will they interchange? Thanks.

Would first check out all the wheel cylinders and to see if any of the pistons have seized up from rust. Good time to clean each cylinder as you go.

I guess it makes more sense to start at the wheels and work toward the master? Thanks

Wheel cylinders are more likely to rust up and seize, than the MC. So more likely best to start there.
If the MC has rust in it, it tends to tear up seals and leak out brake fluid.
