Id want to confirm my gen and reg were working correctly cause you dont want to ruin that nice battery. |
That's what I'm thinking. Are those easy components to test? Is the test procedure in the Bentley?
After researching it appears the timing, (assuming the distributor is good), is to set it at 5 ATDC with vacuum lines connected. _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

Thanks, that's the thread I was using.
So I vacuum tested the distributor and the vacuum for mechanical advance works however the vacuum for idle doesn't hold a vacuum:( I guess I now have an SVDA (do I leave the vacuum port on the distributor unplugged? I've plugged the carb side for now).
This may be related to my "mistake" but I'll post the question anyway. The car now turns over and will run if I give it gas but then dies. I've got it timed at 7.5 BTDC as best I can right now. Is this issue choke related since it's happening before the engine gets warm? Or is there something else I need to adjust first? Once I can get it idling after it being warm I can do a more accurate timing and I can properly adjust the idle. _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

So after charging the battery it seemed to run fine however after a couple of minutes it died.
The gen light was on the whole time and revving the engine didn't change that. So either my generator or voltage regulator is bad.
I do have a spare bosch solid state voltage regulator (the one they sell on karmannghia.com), if my generator is bad is there any harm in hooking up the spare VR to it? I don't want to ruin another VR while trying to troubleshoot things. _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

This ^.
The good news is the hot spark is good.
If the generator spins freely (only takes like 3 seconds), then suspect the voltage regulator. The new solid state ones are nice...
Good luck, KC. _________________ 1969 Ghia Vert - Jenny.

So I swapped out my VR for the other one and either that's dead too or the gen is bad.
Even worse, my turn signals don't work anymore again:|
I tested the VR per the Bentley but it doesn't say what it means when you don't get any voltage showing up on the voltmeter.
Next step will be trying what the previous poster suggested. _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI
