I have a 77 westy with a Sagging Rear problem. The rear tires are tapering in a little. I don't know if the PO tried to lower it or what not. Any suggestions how to get my ass back up?
Thanks |

You need to reset your torsion bars. A spline will usually do it. |

Old bus rear ends just sag in the rear end when they get old.(a-lot like people) Look in the bentley manual on replacing the torsion bars. When you get to the part Where you're ready to pull the spring plates off make a couple of marks so you know where the splines in the spring plates correspond with the splines on the bar. Move the spring plate so the end is closer to the ground by one spline and put it together. Drop the bus and see how it looks. The inside of the bar also has splines for different amounts of adjustment but it's harder to line up if you don't know what you're doing so make sure you don't pull the bar out while your'e trying to get the spring plate off. If you do or if you don't mark the initial setting on the outer you might end up having to make all those adjustments with the protracor on level ground to get both sides equal again. One spline on the outside has always brought a sagging rear end up nicely for me. |

What you suggest is universally regarded as being bad for the CV joints because they only allow for 18 degrees of rotation. If it wasn't a problem, VW wouldn't have required a vernier adjustment to correct for sag. |
