Here's an OG optional inside locking latch:

The knob locks it from the inside and makes it impossible to open externally or internally, I guess it's an added safety feature as locking the outer knob would have basically the same effect but still allow escape.
Here's what I have done on a few campers for inside release:

The bread tie is just for demo purposes, bicycle brake cable works way better Wink One tiny hole and you can reach it with the mattress in place. This works on any hatch lock.

Just using an ordinary key ring.

Creative, but how do you get in from the outside now?

?? From one of the doors or leave the hatch open. I'm not sure I understand the question.

I put the ring there as an option for getting out of the camper from the inside instead of having to get out, walk to the back, and open it from outside.

The lever that you have the ring through is bent inwards and it doesn't look like the outer button can contact it anymore.

It's stock. I bent nothing and the metal doesn't look distressed like if the PO bent it. The lock & mechanisim is 100% functional.

I'm thinking of a way to have the pull-rod inside with out having any safety problems with kids opening it while driving. So you can have a rod with a spring attached around its length and have the rod split in the center and unless the knob is turned one way or the other to lock it as one full rod or unlock and have it as two non-connected rods and when you pull on the rod it just either pulls and doesn't open the hatch or when pulled it will. The knob will be turned to lock the whole rod together as one and then once pulled it would open the lever. Then once turned the other way it disconnects the rod back into two separate pieces. This may sound confusing but i have it worked out in my head and ill work up some plans and see what works best. if any one also has some ideas for it then let me know, thanks

Inside latch release for the rear hatch?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Panel removed. Note hole in latch lever is already there.

A 6" piece of 3/32" plastic coated cable with the ends stripped and a 3/32" cable compression sleeve (swage) from my local hardware store.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I removed latch. Looped cable threw release lever and swaged compression sleeve onto both cable ends. Reinstalled latch with three mounting screws.

I marked and cut a hole in the panel. Being careful not to cut the material from the back. Cut an X in the material from the front and installed grommet.

Strange timing on your thread. I had just extended the lever on mine for inside unlatching. But just now replaced my lever extension for a small cable loop.
The way mine was it was nice and it took a downward push on the lever to unlatch. And no little kids around to worry about them opening the hatch. But If anything stored or laying up on the engine compartment shelf moved around and pushed down on the lever it would have opened. I can just picture all my camping gear scattered along the highway.

The little cable loop is much better.

Thought I came up with something unique Shocked until read the other posts. At any rate this is what I came up with. Threaded rod through the outside hole of the latch mechanism, so as not interfere with the exterior push button latch. Drilled a hole through the panel and screwed on a cut down door pull. Looks like something the factory might have done.

Looks good.

I used the old key ring and it is hidden behind the mattress so it is hard to accidentally open:

I made a button to open the back door from the inside.
The goal was to make it look as original as possible.
I had already mounted a handle to pull the door (this comes from the cabin doors)
