Hey y'all,
Great big thanks and a round of applause for everyone who made ss14 possible! Something to look forward to all year long. I hope we can make caravan of folks next year from syncrofest to ss15! How epic that would be...
Thanks for all the great pictures posted so far. I've been slow to the com-pooter to post my photos due to endless baloney on the home front. But here it goes. I got some photos from Justin Tamashiro (a great trail buddy to have) and Jon "the toyota guy" who parked his butt in my passenger seat the whole time. On a side note he plans to make a large cardboard Vanagon cover for his toyota as an entry prerequisite for next years event.
Trail set list-
Thursday - rt31 manti-la sal national forest, buckhorn wash, crystal geyser, buckhorn wash, Hans solo
Friday- shafer switchbacks, night rider(Hans solo, Bartlett wash overlook, snakes in a van)
Saturday- fins n things
Sunday- hells revenge
Monday- porcupine rim trail, castle valley overlook, long canyon
Leaving home
Manti-la sal mnts. Snow to buckhorn wash desert in an 1.5 hrs
Shafer switchback gang
Night ride Bartlett overlook obstacle illuminated by led light bar
Fins n things gang
Syncro resting its head for a moment, cooling off in the sand..
Taking soil samples...
Fins n things beauty
Hells revenge breakdown spot. Broken cv joint and sheered axle. Weird
Porcupine rim trail and castle valley overlook
A giant thanks to t3 technique(Christopher) for his help and patience on the road to moab. I would have not made it with out your help. Big up to David Hines for his tutoring and help along the road, and to my pit crew who were super helpful in my break down justin and Jon thanks guys!
Cheers

thanks for the great photos
> Hells revenge breakdown spot. Broken cv joint and sheered axle. Weird
couple of questions:
1. was there wheel spin before the axle failure?
(Im guessing that wheelspin when crossing a hole, followed by the wheel suddenly being stopped by ground contact, preceeded the shearing)
2. Had that axle previously been installed on the driver side?
(the only axle Ive ever sheared, met both those criteria)
Great male bonding excercise
And I think a caravan from Fest to Solstice is a great idea! _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |

Sweet pics. Congrats on doing Hell's Revenge!
It would indeed be epic to caravan between events next year. Let's hope the stars align for some of us to pull it off! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Kammy.....you are more than welcome....ANY time. Up the trail-challenge for next year! My joy.
Jahbah.....great pictorial report. Very glad you come to the Utahr event and the trek from Hollister to Moab WILL happen. Can hardly wait. Lotsa enthusiasm from the 'Fest brain-trust and you know how contagious that can be.
Jon.....see above.
Think I gotta put some front CV boot guards on my rig....more cut/torn front boots. The good news: now I've got 2 front spare axles. |

Dustin, No problem at all! I was happy to be able to help. Glad that we all made it to Hans' place.
Syncrofest and Syncro Solstice? Dates aligned for consecutive weekends? NW Caravan to both events? Hell yeah! Count me in! _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

oh oh oh the videos too!!
Link
Link
Christopher- your the man! get down here and wheel with us!!
Photodave- you gotta come next year and put together one sweeet video
Jonslider- yes and no on the breakage. the axle was rotated from the drivers side. But no wheel spin. I was lock and jammed my nose into a ledge that was welllll too big. I unlocked but I think it stuck ingauged and the sand stone....
Enjoy the videos.
cheers

Makes me wish I had kept those rock sliders I won...if I had a beater Syncro. I hope whoever ended up with them puts them to use. Maybe next year I'll win something I can use on my 2wd like a tranny rebuild from AAA or a 10cent engine..In my dreams! |

Hey guys! This is Zach, my buddy Chris and I were the ones with the old 64 bus on the trailer. Thanks so much for letting us crash your party, we had a great time. It was honestly one of the best days of my life! Definitely going to make some time for it next year, I'd LOVE to go on a trail ride!
I wanted to share a bit about that old bus. This is how we found it, sitting for 30+ years:
Last weekend we coaxed the old engine back to life, and took it for a short spin Same old bias ply tires, same everything. Mostly needed just a battery and a carb rebuild, and a lot of TLC.
http://youtu.be/XmECcKgjV3g
We ended up buying all 5 buses on the property, and a couple Alfa Romeo's. We took 4 trips up there to get all 7 cars back. A lot of work, but a ton of fun!
See you all next year! _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

Dates probably hinge on when Syncrofest gets their venue. I believe reservations for the Solstice campground can be made after January 1 2015. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

What Hans said, butt.....you can generally plan on the Fest being on about late April/first week in May, and SS in Moab the following week. I think Seth-and crew get priority at Hollister due to their even being so consistently in early May, and running for so many years. |

all signs point to yes for SyncroFest in the first weekend in May, but it's not 100% confirmed yet.
we're all hoping we can get Solstice the week later so we can put together a rally of sorts between the two. I don't think we're looking to do one big caravan, but maybe a route or routes to take. either way it will be fun times! we'll start a SyncroFest '15 thread when we get the dates nailed down. |

I'm trying to lure my brother from Baton Rouge to come this year; when are we going to find out solid dates for Solstice 2015? _________________ Joe T.

It's definitely a concern. We'll camp at a separate site if necessary. _________________ Joe T.

It was mentioned before about "how difficult it is to capture the sheer scale of the canyons and rock formations around Moab through pictures" Here is a picture that Ron Chandler took of our group going down the Shafer Trail just inside Cayonlands National Park. I feel Like a Micro Machine.
