This is a question for those knowledgeable with the internals of pre-61 split case gearboxes. I am rebuilding a May of 58 type 1 split case gearbox and need to find a better main shaft as my first gear is in rough shape. I have ads in the classified looking for parts but I haven't had any luck. My question is could a pre-58 snap ring grooved main shaft be used in place of the non-grooved shaft either outright or with some fairly simple modifications? It looks like the groove only provides bearing retention/location which the dowel pin does on the later shaft. However, the later style uses a needle bearing that rides directly on the shaft and the early style is a caged ball bearing where the inner race makes contact with the shaft. Does anyone have a main shaft they can take measurements on or want to sell? There are a bunch of the early shafts in the classifieds but none of the later ones.

Shaft's OD where the bearing rides is 24.9mm and to clarify this is the bearing next to the reverse idler closest to the clutch, part number 113309125.

Thanks
Josh

I know, I'm looking. There are a handful of NOS earlier style ones with the snap ring groove under $150 that's why I posted my question about modifying/inter-changeability of the earlier shaft. I wouldn't be surprised if it's possible to make it happen with some light machine work. I'll keep looking either I'll find a shaft or another complete donor gearbox.
