Ready to change the hyp gear oil in the 4spd should you drain it cold?
Few people told me to run it a while drive a few then drain
My thoughts are the shit in the bottom ( cold) will drain out
If it was warm all that shit would be smeared out all over the place |

Hot or cold doesn't matter, just takes longer cold. Did mine cold just let it drain tell no more oil comes out. Like 2 hours for me! And it helped to have the front end up. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Warm. I always have my oil drain pan out for engine or diffy or tranny drain time so when I come back to the garage I have the drain plug out within a minute or two. I also remove the fill plug first so the oil can come out at high velocity, and also because it's good practice in case the fill plug strips or otherwise won't come out so you are not stranded.

If you drive the van for a bit before pulling the plug, more nasties are apt to be held in suspension and will be removed with the oil. |

Drained it -normal metals on the magnet-small stalagmite of 90K of wear
Filled it 1.6 qts plus -but don't feel any at the plug hole shouldn't I
It's on a slight grade in my driveway but still, don't have my Bentley
Any input would be appreciated |

I always warm up the new gear oil in the microwave so that it pours or pumps easier. |

The manual says 3.2 quarts.
However, it also says after that spec, "To reduce shifting effort, transmission oil capacity has been reduced. ... Oil should only be poured in to a level approximately 15mm below the hole." |

I tried that BS when I first bought my Syncro as it couldn't hardly be forced into gear. As one would expect dropping the level made zero difference. |

I just had mine rebuilt and my rebuilder said to put 3.2 qts. in.
How much oil are you guys putting in when you fill it to the fill hole? _________________

Saying that specs are different than dimensions doesn't make sense. Porsche specs/VW specs/engineering specs are nothing but a series of dimensions, sizes, percentages, measurements, etc. |
