Hello, anyone know of a source for short rear seatbelts? The vw parts suppliers seem to have the same belt for the front and rear--each side is between 30"-33" long. These are ok for the front, but is overkill for the rear lap belts. thx

What you say is true, but you are still better off, probably, buying belts from a VW supplier.
When I had this problem, the local upholstery shop wouldn't touch them for legal reasons (if their sewing failed) for "handmade" lap belts. I ended up making my own since the 67 ratcheting belts are like a vice.
But the good news for you is that if you buy the long ones you can just cut off the extra length you don't need and melt/fold and sew/cap/take to a shoe shop and just finish off the end, and you wont need to redo the whole belt.
Aren't the new belts just folded and sewn so the end doesn't go back through the buckle?
Why reinvent the wheel for finding shorter belts?
A shoe shop could resew the fold for you.
Hope this helps.

I installed a pair in my ’67 that came with the car when I bought it. The PO had purchased them but never installed. They are quite long but I find that useful; while removing and installing the seat bottom I unhook them and drape them over the seat back to keep them out of the way. This negates having to have an extra pair of hands to hold them out of the way while installing the seat bottom so they don’t get stuffed under the cushion (if they’re too short to drape).

There are lots of seat belts available in the Samba Classified. I would be surprised if you couldn't find what you're looking for there.
