O boy do I have some stupid questions.. Ive been searching but I figure I can ask here and find them easier. Ive been an Audi Guy since I was 18 and the oldest VW I have owned is a Corrado.

I picked up this 70 VW (bus, Westfalia, bay, type2a)??? How would I classify my new project. I got it with NO rust, only rust is in the battery tray. Its really amazing how rust resistant this Bus has been. plus for 1600 bucks running and driving and very complete you cant beat it.

Also Im trying to figure out the best cheapest way to do a disc brake swap in the front.

Where are some of the best places to order parts?

What are the bars on the hinge things in the top of the pop up? Also is there supposed to be anything up there besides more head room?

also when driving my shifter linkage feels really sloppy, it goes back into 1st when im trying to get into third. Is there a kit I can replace all the linkage with?

Whats the best place to buy Subaru motor swap parts?


Thanks for any help. Im pretty excited to get started, everything seems to be there i just need to update it and tighten it up.

ASAP get all engine tin in place and that carb looks to new be stock check the jets!
60 to 65 idle, 127.5 to 130 main, air 125?

not sure. Some hack job aftermarket turn signal attempt.. Not sure how its supposed to look or what supposed to be on there but there are a bunch of wires. Most of the lights work.

Yea guy I got it from put it in there. Ive never re jetted a carb so when I pull the motor im gonna check it out.

This is my first year with the camper also.
Those camping trips are truly epic.

I replaced my cot earlier this year.
Good place to stash a kid.

Bus depot has good canvas replacements for your pop top too.

It has a folding hammock "cot" up top needs cot material to be sewn on. I think Porsche 944 front disc brakes fit. The aftermarket kits to make them disc are pretty spendy and rare! Looks like it's a single port 1600 which should get a little better gas milage. Be nice to rebuild it as a 1971 Dual port engine though! Keep your eye's open for a rebuildable core complete dog-house engine! (Got to have the 3 point rear mount holes in the case!) Or if you have a good dual relief case you could just buy the dog-house fan shroud etc and put dual port heads on. The Dual DRLA or IDF carbs are the way to go on these early bay window busses like ours.

Im interested in the 944 brake swap we have at least 5 at my local pick an pull. Any links to this swap that can confirm they will work?

And Here in this link about rims RCR Jacob's of Vacaville, CA has them: Info on porsche wheels write up. Looks like it's a 1974.

Drum brakes are teh suck IMO. I honestly just want disc up front. I also want the options of swapping to a different wheel type. I plan on lifting slightly and running some meaty tires.

Hmm good to know I will hafe to read up about that some more.

The more I read the more I think it may be too expensive to swap front and rear. If anything i may just get the disc front to fit the wide 5.

Finally getting to work! Happy to say I am pleased with the condition of everything. Couple odd things but overall stock with little to no molesting from previous owners. No hacking, no weird wiring.

Once the motor was out I pulled the fuel tank cover to check things out. No rust inside at all and the fuel tank looks pristine. So i sealed it back up since id rather not touch it if i'm not having any issues with it.

Found why it was hard to get it into gear. Parts of the throw out bearing was lying in the bellhosuing.

So my Engine case has a U for the first letter. What does that mean? I thought it was supposed to have an A?
