Was planning on buying a bus next year when I get back from deployment, but I've been thinking about them a bunch and watching buses for sale. Found one I could afford and best of all, it was running and driving.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Took 2 hours to drive there on the interstate, but I didn't want to take the interstate home so it took nearly 4 hours to get home. Pedal to the floor on the hills! Even got passed by a semi. Laughing

Missing engine tins, some bondo, some rust, but hey it runs and drives. Plenty of stuff that needs fixed, tonight I repaired the loose turn signal switch. Shifter is super sloppy. Engine leaks oil quite a bit, and needs tins so I'll be pulling that out and probably break it down to the long block and freshen it up. They threw in a bunch of extra parts, but I think most of it is the old engine, so who knows if any of it is any good.
More pictures soon!

Well, first priority is to get the engine correct, with the correct tins and try to fix the oil leaks. Then fix the sloppy shifter.

Long term, I'd like to keep it a Deluxe Passenger bus. If I'm going to go camping, it's more than likely I'll be going on my motorcycle. So no camping conversion here, however maybe some sort of option for a bit of camping. I like the rear lift gate tent that I've seen on another bus on here.

I really want to learn how to weld, so that may be for next year. Fix the rust, then paint it. The original color is L53D Niagra Blue, however my Bug is L54D Marina Blue, and they're very close. I've always liked dark colors on Deluxe Buses, I think it makes the chrome trim pop. So I might go with Dark red or something like Elm Green.

Pulled the engine today. Definitely missing some tins. Front and rear tins, the 2 parts that go to the oil cooler. Ironically the Hoover Bit is there.
Of course there's no thermostat, and the flaps aren't hooked up either. I'm surprised it even has flaps in it.

Laughing Haha, yeah.... Trying to find 1st and 2nd the whole way home wasn't fun. Would go into 3rd when I thought it was 1st, reverse instead of 2nd...

Already ordered a bunch of bushings and the shifter 'kit' that includes a lever.

It just amazes me how many people think they know what makes a VW engine tick. Can't blame the PO for this, he said he had someone build the motor for him. Oh yeah, and I found two different brands of spark plugs installed. Brick wall

Backwards lower sled tins:

Embarassed Makes sense- going down the road the air is scooped into the motor- If it exits the fan you don't need a fan belt.

I'm making progress with the 1600 refresh. Almost finished putting it back together, waiting on a few things in the mail. In the meantime I've started replacing all the shift rod bushings and parts and cleaning up other things.

The front seats that were installed are not VW seats, they were just bolted straight to the floor. The original seats were included, I'm trying to install the original passenger seat, and I can't figure out how to mount it. Does it look like I'm missing something here?

you are missing the bracket that bolts by the walk thru area held on by 2 6mm bolts and looks like they cut the welded one off.

it's a 2 slot bracket that the seat kind of drops in to

Just picked up ours and replacing the bushings next to the tranny completely changed the "shift-ability" between 1st and second.

And yes you're missing the two slot sheet metal that holds the passenger seat down.

Good luck with the restoration!

this isn't much of a photo but you can see at the top how the passenger seat is attached, and in the lower right of the right photo the bracket that it goes into. The explanation is there too.

Thanks a bunch for that. I'll have to keep an eye out for a bus being parted out so I can grab those.

Finished cleaning up the engine and getting all the proper parts back on it. Hoover bit, doghouse tins, thermostat and flaps, pushrod tubes replaced, new fuel lines, and a new 34PICT3 carb. I only had a bug muffler so I had to use that for now. Also replaced all the shifter bushings and parts, I can actually find the gears now.
She runs and drives again! Engine runs better and it didn't assplode when we went out for dinner tonight. Since doing all this work the engine seems quieter even though it had a bug muffler on it previously. I'm hoping this 1600 will be reliable until I get back next year and build my 2007 for it.

Did you find those shifter parts in a kit or did you order them individually? If a kit, can I get a link please? I need to order the same for mine.
