High Temp Light Sensor Location.

88 Westy, 2.5 EJ conversion. Recently driven from VA to CO without a problem. A couple of times lately the high temp light comes on after start-up (when the engine is operating temp hot) and taken 5-15 secs to go out. The Scangauge indicates 180 or so. The High speed fan doesn't come on.
Does the light read off the radiator sensor or the engine?

Hasn't happened before, hence the concern....

The light does double duty, the gauge turn the light on when the engine overheats, and the level sensor in the reservoir turn the light on when the coolant level drops below minimum.

I know zip-all about conversions, but since some (I think) retain the coolant pressure tank from the WBX, I'll mention that on that engine the sensor that triggers the light is on the pressure tank and is activated when the coolant in that tank drops below a certain level.

That sensor really has no direct connection to temperature other than it would come on if there was a massive leak. If you have that sensor you may just have an air bubble in the coolant -- possibly one that only appears under certain conditions.

The circuitry for the light is know to give problems. Some searching and reading may be in order.

Check the connection on the level sensor in the pressure tank and pull the sensor and scrub in CLR as they get gunky and will give false readings as they cannot read the conductivity of the coolant any more. Once everythings tiddly you could check for continuity in coolant to make sure it's working. If it checks out move on from there. Some capacitor apparently goes in the gauge circutry on some. Search the samba for that one.

Obvious question that has to be asked: are you low on coolant?

I'll scrub the connector. Coolant tank is full and overflow tank at or around max level.
