|
|
I was looking at a stock replacement muffler. I saw that Mufflers made in Brazil sell for about $60.00, and what looks like the exact same muffler made in Germany sells for $120.00. 100% increase in price. Is the German muffler really twice as good as the one from Brazil? |

Made in Brazil sounds like Carnival. Made in Germany like the Oktoberfest.
I personally prefer Oom-pah purr to Samba droning. Flanges might match up to the cylinder heads better, too. _________________ David Ruby

I don't know sounds a lot like a lot of things on the internet today, with little basis in fact. At times it seems if you say something enough it does become true or another internet fact.
The only reason I brought the subject up, was because the german muffler was more then double the price. |

$130 exhaust system, to me sounds very reasonable. I know i paid at least double that for mine and its not SS.
If you dont know...and you dont ask...your gambling, and the house always wins. Cheaper and eaiser to just ask at thesamba, take advantage of those that have already made the mistakes. Have i mentioned the time i blew up a battery in my ghia and wore the same pants to work the next day?
You can buy $18 dollar 009 distributors, $17 dollar rocker skins... Ive learned my lesson and wont again. They are cheap for a reason.

I've messed around with aircooled VW's from 1990 on. Every time I bought a Brazilian-made part, it was either defective (brake components were particularly so), needed work or rework to be fitted or operate for its designed purpose (on a stock car in otherwise decent condition), or of so rough a fit and finish that it was painfully evident to the eye that "I got what I paid for."
If my perspective or experience does not establish fact (and I'll understand if one data point or voice does not necessarily), perhaps actual parts vendors or resellers (paging Mike at HoG, Scott, Dave, or Andre at KGPR... to the white courtesy phone) will enlighten us on the difference between parts and why one costs as much as two, and if the extra cost is worth it. _________________ David Ruby

And I dare say you're not talking about the soccer (football) either. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

The German would be the best fit and quality. I don't use aftermarket "stock"style exhausts. I have cut a few stock and stock style mufflers apart and there are obvious differences. |

I have always had problems with parts made outside of Europe - i.e., German, Dutch, etc.
In the case of mufflers it was poor fit. Heat risers not lining up, flanges off, etc. Not sure about durability, assuming you get it fitted. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

I have also seen mufflers listed as "made in Europe" for as little as $79.00. Which is still $50.00 cheaper then "made in Germany" |
