I have two small pieces of tin about 2X3 with a notch ( slit) on both tabs. They were left off by the previous owner. Can someone tell me where they might go. and how to get them in place with removing any engine parts. I understand it goes above the push rod tubes. I thank you for needed help

left off? thats bad.
You have to install them (they snap to the cylinder studs) when the heads are off and the pushrods/tubes are out. (while the motor is out)
See the black square on each side of the engine above the pushrod tubes in on the cylinder fins. my photo below-

If you have time and patience, you may be able to finagle them in place with the engine assembled.
Try not to run the engine without them, you'll end up toasting your cylinders. |

I can't believe someone left those off.
Yes, I can believe it. Don't run the engine without those !!!! Or you won't have much engine left !!!!

The blk pieces are they next to the block?
How is the best way to install them without taking the head off? The body of the bug is off the pan,

If you have a hard time believing that wait till you hear this. After rebuilt my motor I had my VW mechanic do the timing and carb and install all at once (I was on a time crunch, give me a break  ). He said he was impressed I didn't screw it up, when I asked what he meant he relayed some home rebuild horror stories. The best by far was a guy who put the tins on the bottom of the tins like he should but also added an extra set on the TOP! He was very confused as to why his engine was toast apparently...

I guess some people just forget to install them or to lazy.
Mr Duncan. Can you please tell me exactly where the tin goes. I can,t quite figure the picture out.
XBIG DX 408X. Can you please tell me what I have to do to install the tin without removing the head and pushrod tubes?
More idea would be helpful from the members

Just call me Big D. 
I'm reminded of the time the starter packed its bags on my Toyota MR2. The BGB (Toyota equivalent of the Bentley manual) stated that complete removal of the exhaust system, manifold and all, was necessary to replace it. Time and patience proved otherwise.
The tabs on those little plates aren't so long IIRC. I think you'd be able to get them in by removing the sled tins to give you some room, and then slipping them in place between the tubes and jugs, and snapping them in over the head studs. I haven't had to test this theory, but it's worth a shot. |

You literally just push them between the cylinders, on the bottom side, the tabs click onto the head bolts. The tabs are asymmetrical so there is a correct orientation but it is pretty easy to figure out which way is right by looking at it.

Spend long enough working at a VW garage and it almost becomes surprising when you see an engine that still has them.
Engines worked on by non VW mechanics they often get the heads and pushrods on then realise shit I forgot those, meh to much work to fit customer wont notice

Thanks for all of the help.
I see the one now that are circled .
I hope the tabs go in without bending them to slide in.
You are right about people leaving things off that they forgot, hoping the customer would not catch it.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away I had a buddy I was helping with the same problem.
I cut the verticle parts off that "Clip" to the cylinder studs, and safey wired
the defectors in place.
It was a fresh rebuild of unkown value, but my friend wanted it "fixed" quickly without pulling the motor, or pulling the heads.

My thought on head tins:
"Without them, your engine will explode and you will die"
its not true, but helps me remember. They are important, every piece of tin is important expect the pulley cover.
