The very next step...And it SHOULD HAVE BEEN much earlier in the process... is to decide what shocks you're going to use on the rear. Using stock arms and stock T1 CVs will limit the wheel travel to about 9".
Some folks will Poo Poo that travel. But it's not their $$ they're talking about is it? So set them on ignore.
Those EMPI coilovers are good for yard sale. Might be cool on a swap meet wagon. On an offroad buggy...NOT!!!
A pair of 9" or 10" travel Rancho 5000s or similar from the wrecking yard would work fine. I bought a pair for my pickup for $10. Go for a pair of those on each side and it should work fine for play. I just replaced the original shocks on my 2K Durango and found they were nice stout gas shocks with 5/8" shafts. Similar to KYB Gas-A-Just, but bigger and beefier. Find some with low miles and you're golden.
Figure on mounting those on the top of the arms above the hubs. Be sure to install them so the mounting bolts at the arms and at the upper mounts on the frame are parallel to the arm pivot bolts. Lots of people get this wrong. You can make mount tabs out of steel square tube or flat bar stock. 1/8" thick in double shear (both sides of the shock) should be good. 1/4" minimum if single shear.
Set the mounts so the shocks can't top out or bottom out at max CV travel like stated earlier.
And by the way...Are you in Pasadena CA, TX or PA? Or some other Pasadena? _________________ Richard

A little more info. Got the eng on and it dropped 1 1/4" w/o the shocks.
from the current stance I think I can comfortably go up 3-4" before any issues.
what you think now? |

by the looks of the axles, yes.
I have all stock type 1 suspension, turned a few splinters and I'm at 13 degrees on the CVs. Do not do this. listen to dusty, its poo poo _________________ Wash your hands

Yes I know I need to address the shocks; I like you idea. I finally got my "box" kit in for my tailing arms. Time for the welding mask! |

Ok, I finally boxed in by control arms. That said, I think I'm gona have some issues with the shocks I was wanting to use. Below you can see the clearance issues. The frame is a Hawkeye 4 seater. If my angles allow it and different shocks do you think it wil be ok to put the shocks inside the frame under the gas tank. Is there any other suggestions. As previously mentioned i want to keep the base of the shocks over the axil.

Another thing I would do for clearance is have the tires mounted on the car that you are going to be using. The barely got the shocks to fit without hitting the tire and full compression. _________________ “It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”
