here is my 59 15 window build. Hello all. Im Joe i live in Wichita, Ks. I own a 59 15 window deluxe and a 61 Single cab. I was in the US Air Force for 10 years as a mechanic and now i'm a trainier for AGCO. OK now to the good part. My 59 bus my dad bought it back in 87 and he painted it and redid it for my Mom. In 92 the 59 bus got parked in a family friends field upon the passing of my mom and sister. Fast forward 22 years i went and asked the guy that had the bus if i could buy it back but instead of having to buy it back he gave it back to me under one condtion I had to repaint it back to the original paint scheme my dad painted it. Purple and White. i went back down to his house a month later and spent the weekend getting the bus out of the Field. I had to cut down 3 smallish trees and drag it away from another tree to get it out. ive disasembled the bus and have already sent it to the media blaster. I get to pick it up this week and primer it and start welding all the new sheetmetal in lower nose, inner and outer rockers floors and battery tray. there is small holes in the window channels in almost all of the windows. I am having a 1776 built for it right now. I am lowering the front with flipped spindles and i already have the irs kit for the back. The single cab is put up till the Bus is done, Me and my dad built it togather when i was a kid. keep an eye out for pics

yea..I dont think I'd paint it back to purple and white....after going thru all your work. OG colors are best...IMO. Nice work by the way.

i would paint it back to the OG colors but its a Tribute to my mom and sister that were killed in a car Crash. i have no problem driving around in a Plum Crasy Purple and white bus. when i was little me and my sister would play in the floor of the bus. My mom redid the interior for the bus when my dad finished it. but its long gone now since it sat for so long and someone grabbed the seats and alot of the parts off the bus. The bus is from Oklahoma. thats where i pulled it out of the field and i was raised down there. yeah thats a bay window. the bay belongs to a family friend. its just a shell. not much left of it and if i remember right it was hit on the passenger side.

It looks like you're going about the repairs the correct way and have a nice foundation to build on. Keep posting your progress pics.

It would be nice if you painted it original factory colors vs. what you're doing now. I get the family tribute but wouldn't they understand that it would look so much nicer in original colors?

I would think just restoring that family treasure and getting it back on the road would be a huge tribute in it's self.

Keep up the good work.

+1

I think it's very cool you're painting it the same colors as when your mum had the bus - family tribute, memories - great stuff that money can't buy. Looking forward to more progress photos. Cool

BTW, I have an early '59 15 window.....

og colors would make it a lot more valuable, BUT with the story attached I would probably do the same thing and go with the plum crazy. You're building it out of respect, not to flip in a few months, so keep up the good work, and keep those pictures coming!

Exactly, it's only paint..... easily changed back to OG M code colours for any future owner. But the history, the story behind our beloved 50+ year old VW buses is also something special and worth preserving. Cool

I like og colors, but this is one situation that makes sense to go with custom colors. Can't imagine a better reason. What are the plans for interior? My vote is white with some purple piping, Laughing

I was going to say paint it some factory colors too...but as a tribute to your Mom and Sis....rock the purple and white! It looks like a damn good start...well preserved.👍

It’s awesome that you are painting it back the way it was. I am sick of everything having to be originally paint or rusted apart aka “Patina” to be cool. It’s your bus your building as a tribute to your family paint it however you want. Good luck on the build.

You made a deal with the guy... being a Man of your word is better than anything anyone says around here. Plus doing that for you Mom & Sister bumps that 100 fold! Looking forward to seeing more pictures.
