Ok I've been trying to fix my 1974 VW type 2's engine for about nine months now. Here is the problem the engine wont stop missing. The spark plugs dirty about every 2-3 weeks and I have to pull them all out and clean them. After that it will work fine for a couple of weeks before I have to do it again. I posted a question about the dirty plugs earlier and was told "If the plugs are oily dirty, its compression, and that I'm screwed. But if its a dry ashy build up that my engine is running to rich." Well I tried to do a compression test and it failed to work because my gauge wasn't long enough, but I think I have the dry ashy build up anyways. So my question is "If my engine is running to rich how do I fix it?"

I'f you can help... Please do.

Thanks,
Steve

If this is a sudden problem then I suspect the distributor slipped and the timing is off or the points slipped and you aren't getting the dwell necessary for a decent coil saturation.

Try first doing a complete tune-up with new Bosch plugs, cap, rotor, wires, etc...
Was '74 FI?
Anyway, the new parts are nice and not too spendy and you will likely discover the trouble in the course of the tune up.

Mike!
