|
|
With the help of Clatter and his OG door panel, our machinist was able to CNC a die for the heat press to recreate the lower ribbed portion. This has been a long process( a few months) to get to this point and be allowed to get this idea into R&D in front of all the other projects for SEMA was another hurdle. But here is what we have so far.It took a lot of trial error on the heat press to get the ribs right with the right profile and also heat it enough to lose the grain but not destroy the vinyl. I would say we could get this to about 97% correct if not closer.

Agreed. Looks good from here. Wish the door panels in my wife's 70 Fastback looked like those at the bottom (it's got TMI panels in it). Can't complain too much, as they've been in the car since 1992. Still look good too, after all these years. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah, the TMI stuff has always been really nice and holds up well- it's just not correct!

Martin, please post a pic of exactly which panel you are asking about. I'm going to assume this one. I've been told no in the past, they won't do the horizontal heat seems.

Thanks for the pic, that is exactly what I am talking about. How much different would it be than what they are offering right now in the upper post? just spread the lines more. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

its a little more involved then just "spreading the lines" more. Each and every part needs a pattern to made from only after I determine if there is a wide enough spread of years to cover. One year only will usually not make it very far. Without a original, I wont even submit it to R&D. Then from there tooling has to be made for the heat seals. This is not done by us. We outsource this after we give them the CAD drawings. After 5-6 weeks we get the tooling back and do a first run and check for correctness. Its either changed or passes QC. From there the pricing is set up to include all production cost.
Right now we have almost 2 years into a dash pad and close to $15K in R&D. Its needs a metal brace stamped out and the company doing it will only make their tooling if we commit to 500+ pieces. It will take YEARS to recoup the cost of this project, but it was started before I got here.
I wish it was easier then this, but its not and it all comes down to numbers. I had big ideas of Type 3 dashes and armrest till they broke down how things are done. I will still keep pushing for new products, but as particular as VW owners are and things must be 100% correct, it makes it very costly and herd to get approval _________________ Mario De Leon

That is very cool that you are able to listen to the consumer and get the changes made that have been asked for.
Thank you for what you are doing. _________________ "...these cars were preferred by the racers because the strut front suspension results in far superior handling than the regular torsion bar front end..." - Keith Seume. |

Thanks for trying, thats all anyone can do right? for what it's worth, those tops are 62-65 notchback and squareback unless I'm wrong. Those owners are the ones that will pay to have them done right, but volume wise, you're probably right ???
You're right, I'm picky and I want it right or I wont buy it, I'll wait and find original material. Such is the car we've chosen... One of the things people need to keep in mind is that anything can be made, but at what cost. Perfect reproduction dashes are out there for 68-70 Porsches. Last I looked, they were $1700... Reproduction 911 seats are out there, last I looked, $1500 range... apples and oranges, I know, but it can be done |
