|
|
I'm getting ready to install my rebuilt 2.0 into my '77. The FI system that I have was purchased from a classified ad here on thesamba, so I have no idea as to its working condition. I had all of the injectors cleaned and tested so I know they should be OK. What I am wondering is, are there any FI system components and vacuum hoses that I can 'skip' when installing and still have a running engine? The reason I ask is, I have never seen this Bus run and I do not know the condition of the FI system, so I want to eliminate any possible problems (wiring, etc...) that I may have if I cannot get the engine to start. I figure if I can start out bare bones I can add the rest of the parts one at a time just to make sure that everything is in working order. Thanks. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Im going to go out on a limb and say no. there's no extra parts. and if you left anything out, there would be a hole, or a gap in the wiring, and that would be a problem.
I bet you'll have more trouble getting it started by skipping parts than just getting all the parts together. the system is simple and has only a few components, have you searched? there are diagrams, lists, colored photos, everything you can imagine available right here on this website to make sure what all the parts are and what they do. _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

Yeah not really... I don't think there has been anything that I've unplugged while diagnosing problems that didn't just shut the engine down, or at least one of the cylinders. You can however, hook some things up incorrectly or poorly and the engine will run, just not well (as me how I know )
There are some great vacuum line diagrams here:

I'd say get as far as you can, then start going through one system at a time, or post a pic to ask if there is anything obvious. _________________ 1975 Westfalia - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516701 |

Run a full diagnostic on the electrical system and fuel system before firing it up and you will know what works or doesn't work. Inspect every hose visually and by blocking one end and sucking on the other to test for leaks, I think you will find that most need to be replaced. I suspect a place like German Supply sells kits with all the hoses, but don't know for sure.
Replace all your rubber fuel line with 30r9 or equivalently rated hose. |

Your best bet is to do a bench test of each component per the Bentley and/or the A.F.C. manual which you can download from the technical section of this website.
Pay particular attention to the Temp Sensor II and the Double Relay. If those items are working, and you have no vacuum leaks, good chance it'll fire right up.
There are plenty of people running without a decel valve or an EGR valve. Those really are kind of "optional" although absence of the decel valve can give you popping/backfire during coasting.
Technically speaking it should also run without the Cold Start Valve or the Auxiliary Air Regulator provided the holes are all plugged. But starting will be much more difficult, and it's more work to leave them out than to hook them up correctly. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

Temp Sensor II, CSV and double relay are all new, as well as vacuum hoses and fuel lines so I should be all set as far as they are concerned. The AAR, decel valve and possibly the wiring were the things that I was most concerned with. I'll check out the A.F.C. manual as was suggested. I'm hoping to throw this thing in next weekend and fire it up! Thanks for the tips. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters
