|
|
The Brake Warning Light in my 1971 Deluxe was not hooked up, I wired it up, and it comes on when the key is turned, as the Oil and Gen Lights do.
I was reading that you can press it in to test it. I think I am missing a spring and the lens just sits inside the socket.
Should there be a spring somewhere?
should the brassy washer go around the lens and then inserted into the socket?
Part # 111 919 233B
when I look up this part in the classifieds, I see a different setup, for the part that holds the bulb.
like this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1670162
just want to have it work properly.
Thanks in advance. _________________ ROBERT

You are missing the spring and that washer goes directly under the red part, see the corresponding nubs that fit the holes. The 113 919 233b is for 73 and later, you need the 111 919 233b for earlies. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. Ok I modified a spring from a door buzzer switch and ready to install.
Just to make sure I am hooking this up right can someone confirm the wire to terminals... not seeing any terminal numbers on the wire diagram
Is the wiring...
Terminal 15 - Black Wire ( ignition circuit )
Terminal K - Red Wire
Terminal 1 - Brown Ground Wire
Terminal 2 - nothing as it grounds to the outer part of the switch
EDITED TO ADD: Found this post Here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=550372&highlight=brake+warning+terminal

Figure 4-8 in the Brakes and Wheels chapter of your Bentley manual has the diagram for the later version of
the brake warning lite. The earlier version has the red wire from brake lite switches to terminal K, the black (ignition circuit)
wire to terminal 15, and the brown ground wire to the single terminal on the removable bulb holder. |

The early brake warning light did not come on when the key is turned on: that's why it had the
"push to test" feature. I don't know how you got it to turn on with the key, unless you have the
wrong bulb holder in there. It needs a single-wire terminal type bulb holder, just like the gen and
oil warning lites have. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

It's what came with the Bus,
the light untwists like all the other bulb holders on the cluster.
It was not connected when I got it, just trying my best! _________________ ROBERT

If yours has 4 terminals it's a 72+ unit and lacks the push to test feature, instead it lights with the generator light every time you turn on the key.
That one uses red to K, black to 15, brown to 1 and the blue generator light wire to 61.
Here's a beetle diagram with the same light and circuit that shows the numbers:

OK, just so were on the same page...
my cluster is dated, 7/70 The Bus I have is an 8/70 VIN Date.
The Front looks like this... ( these are not of my cluster, I didn't have a pic up yet of the full views )
My brake warning light looks like this, with the "B' printed on it.
The Part number is 111 919 233B.
The back of it looks like this: ( I dont have a clock or Tach, just blank plate )
Now where the green and black wire feed the Brake Warning light, I have RED and BLACK and my ground runs from the cluster posts as shown.
Which from this picture looks like Green is going to the K terminal and Black to the 15 terminal. The Ground wire, I can't tell where it goes to.
I am going to stop at a VW graveyard Wednesday afternoon, and pick up one from another '71 and see if it's different.
Appreciate your help and responses. _________________ ROBERT

I think you're OK with your wiring -
it just a little confusing when you wrote: "Terminal 2 - nothing as it grounds to the outer part of the switch".
I think most people would not call that a "terminal", and it does not ground, that's where the bulb socket picks up the power
from the K terminal, or the 15 terminal when the button is pressed.
I've got 111-919-233A and 113-919-233B lights at hand, I don't know how the 111-919-233B version might be different. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Here is the late 113 and one with the wires. Also the early 111 on the right.

No luck in the graveyard, just the later 113 style.
Mine is like the 111 style you show, but is all black.
Does the ground wire go on that high side terminal that you see in the middle on the white part, or on the low side terminal on the opposite side?
I have mine apart in the first pic above, and together in the 2nd pic,
I can see the angle of the pic can make you think its a 113 part.

Color should not make a difference. There is no "low-side terminal" on the other side of the white bulb holder
shown above. Neither is there on any of the black 1-terminal bulb holders I have. The thing you can see on the other
side is a locking tab, not a terminal. If your holder has two terminals,
then it probably doesn't have the metal tab on the bottom where it twists into the warning lite, and therefore will
not work properly. Of course, that means the ground wire gets connected to the one and only terminal on the bulb holder. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

well alright! think that was what I was not understanding.!
Mine does twist into the warning light and locks.
I might not be able to get out to it this evening, but will report back as soon as I hook it up.

Greetings all,
My 78 Westy brake warning light has been inop. I rewired it (correctly I think) but the light comes on and stays on. E-brake lever is seated and brake reservoir is full. What else causes the brake warning light to come on?
Many thanks! _________________ 79 Westy (1.8 ltr)

On a 78 the charge light will trigger it, is the engine running when you are testing?, has the charge light lit when starting and then gone out? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Light stays on with the engine running or not. Perhaps I have a bad brake switch? _________________ 79 Westy (1.8 ltr)
