Finally took my new interior camping last week:

Slept well enough in the new bed that I managed to get myself up at 7am for Dawn Patrol at Long Beach (BC). Thought I'd be the only one there but a white Eurovan beat me!

First big trip (@ 1000kms) on the used engine and transmission I put in back in May. Made it there and back with no issues other than some oil making it's way into the cooling fan in spite of all the new seals I used. Also not convinced the rings have seated (used about a liter of oil) but it does have compression so I'm just going to think happy thoughts.

He'll be 91 next week so we celebrated with Husky Flake Ice Cream (in West Seattle). Same place he used to take us when we were kids. The Westy makes a cameo appearance in their window:

Last Monday, I took my wife and five girls camping at Peaceful Valley up outside of Ward, CO. Three 11 year-olds and two 7 year-olds, two of whom had never been camping. No crying, no injuries. A good bit of complaining when the rain moved in.

A lady came by the campsite and told me she'd had a Vanagon but had sold it recently. Then she offered me a free brand-new, never used Bus Depot EZ Awning along with the three side walls. I was shocked. We went over to her campsite and checked out her well-outfitted Dodge camper van, and she gave me the awning. Wonders never cease.

All in all, it was a good trip and the kids had a blast. Peaceful Valley/Camp Dick has some great hiking trails, too.

Isn't that crazy? I tried to offer her money, talk her out of it, asked her about five times if she was absolutely sure, and there was no changing her mind. Really nice lady on a tour of the US. She had advertised it here and got no responses.

In Washington State, between Mt. St. Helens and the Columbia River, lies Gifford Pinchot National Forest. We accessed it from the Columbia River at the Beacon Rock State Park headquarters and drove a few miles up, took off on an old logging road and ran into some new growth after half a mile. So that is where we stopped.

It's about a 30-mile trip to and from work so not a big deal to some, but I'm really happy to feel more comfortable driving that distance.

Took my Subaru powered 2.2 Syncro Multivan to Tahoe from the bay area ,first real drive since the conversion. Drove it hard and fast and got a true 17 MPG .
This thing will actually pass trucks on an incline and is a sheer joy to drive on the rolling hills.
Was a little cold at night so we fired up the Espar heater and were in total comfort.
Looking forward to a few more excursions like this ,hopefully by then I'll have my Engel mounted and wired .

Dove right in!

This crossing can get exciting, I'm glad it wasn't any deeper or faster for Zapp Vanagon's first swim.

Nice! You gonna tell us where that is? It's up at some altitude, judging from the trees.

It's been a little over two months of living in the van and about 5,000 miles, pretty much just in NY.

This is just west of Indian Lake, NY.

Apologies, it was in the description but apparently that doesn't show up. This is the infamous Scatter Creek crossing on the Cle Elum Valley Road, north of Roslyn, WA.

Went up to Flagstaff at the last minute to cool off for two days while waiting for GoWesty's replacement rotor to arrive (which they managed to screw up, requiring to wait even longer for a replacement for the replacement)... and visit my old stomping grounds at NAU to do some research at Cline.

Took us from Lufkin, TX to Destin, FL for a couple days until the weather got too bad to enjoy the ocean...

So we left and headed to GA, to introduce my kids to the Appalachian trail...slept in the parking lot at Springer mt....

Then up to Great Smoky Mt National Park for a few days...

2400 miles round trip, on a used auto transmission that I only put about 500 miles on locally before heading out. The suby 2.5 did great in the hills/mtns but my mileage wasn't too impressive. The best I got was 15.5 and the worst was 12.4. Overall it was an awesome trip for me and my kiddos.

High summer in Boulder....

Tuna and I cruzed some nearby county backroads scouting quiet/scenic locations for a surprise after-work picnic dinner with the wife sometime later this week.
This looks nice.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Successfully tested the location with a quick mid-morning nap while Tunes chased grasshoppers. Yeah, this'll do.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But by noon it was getting too hot on the prairie, time to gain some altitude.
We loaded up the cooler with drinks & eats and drove up to one of our favorite shady pull off spots, way up Boulder Canyon, with some friends.
Set the camp chairs up in the creek, had lunch and cooled off while watching the rock climbers.
Then we went the rest of the way up to Ned where the girls took a couple spins on the wonderful Carousel of Happiness www.carouselofhappiness.org.
Ice cream cones and a chocolate shake afterwards and then back home..
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This pretty much sums up the day...

Sweet! We'll be putting in at Sawbill later this month. Were you in off the
Fernberg or Echo Trail...??? With all those stairs, looks a little like Fenske...???

Just curious - it's good wherever you go... Cool
