Curious about a second number stamped on my 36HP motor. Stamp below the generator indicates March'57, however, there is another 7 digit number stamped on the side of the stand located behind the oil breather tube. This number would correspond with Sept. '55. Anyone else seen this?

Maybe someone stamped the # from the original engine on it, I have heard that some cars had engine# as VIN# in the title.

Does the stamp on the front side of the case look normal - correct font, etc.?

The reason I ask is that I have seen a few engine cases where the original blew up so the case was replaced with a blank case. The original engine # was stamped on the side and a new engine # stamped on the front side. The new engine # usually looks "wrong" for lack of a better term.

The number on the side could be a VW KD rebuild number. (Factory exchange engine)
I have just cleaned a 48/49 case for a friend, and his has a KD number on the side of the generator pedestal.
Does the number on the side of the pedestal have the letters 'KD' stamped anywhere near it?

After further cleaning I discovered a stamp under the later number that reads Factory Rebuilt so have concluded the number on the side is the original engine number.

Photo in oval window gallery.
