I am looking for Replacement studs for those three M8x1.25x? studs on my 55 Small Nut RGB case halves.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

they are different than the listing for Big Nut case half studs listed in the obselete aircooled doc project as m10x[1.5]x32

A confirmation on the M8x1.25 and their length would be appreciated.

Secondly,

Since the studs pulled out of the RGB case halves when they were removed, am I now required to oversize drill the case halve and put in a bi-threaded stud (as per is common on the oil filter plate), or can I get away with locktite or some other binding agent?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hey Bk!
If you can fit an M8x1.25 nut on there, then that's the correct size, else try to fit an M10 nut on there.

As far as length - you can either measure an old one or just guess - (by measuring the depth of the hole and measuring the stack up of the part(s) that attach to it, including the nut.

You said the studs pulled out - did you mean they stripped out or just backed out?

If they backed out, you can just reuse the same (or replacement stud) with some locktight

or if it stripped out -

you can either re-tap it with a larger stud (M10) and install a dual diameter stud

or clean it out really good, coat the inside of the hole with JB weld and then drill and tap it with an M8 tap

or you even might be able to completely weld up the hole with a MIG, and then redrill and tap it. (I would practice on another housing first)

As far as getting a replacement stud, it should be easy to find online or at a local napa. A lot of exhaust manifold studs are M8x1.25 and should be able to get one in the length you need!

Hope this helps!

(more pics maybe?)

Hey Pete,
Thanks for the breakdown and the tip to go to napa. I went to Edmonton nut and Bolt. They only had set screws... No studs. Go figure.
I'll provide some more pics before I proceed.

Hope you're enjoying the staycation...

K

Hi Kevin!

The studs are 8 X 31

I would think you would be better off finding a new cover - locktite isn't going to work - you could run a step stud but you're going to have to separate the box anyway to keep the shavings out of there - might as well just buy a new cover and be done with it!

Hey Greg,

Covers are long since disassembled. probably go with a step-stud first. I just met a machinist in town that is into old porsches and VW's so with time I can probably have things 'fixed' correctly and not on my home bench.

Else, as stated it might be best to just buy new halves and be done with it!

I have 3 sets of small-nut RGB case halves. each one of them has had at least 1 stud either pull out or strip.

On a side note I have a big-nut half set that pulled an m10x1.5 stud. I had tried to put in an engine stud that I cut to fit but after tapping the 10mm hole the stud thread's in way to easy! Guess I'll buy the case halves for that one too.

Ah the trials of working on 60 year old vehicles!

Aloha,

Kevin
