The top two are 1958 and earlier - the middle one is broken at the screw hole.
The bottom one is 59 and later (or really late 58 with the bulge in the decklid). |

Yes, although there is a 57-58 "flat decklid" license light that is different. The mounting holes are not sunken and it uses a different seal. |
I think the holes might be smaller diameter on the '57-'58 lens as well. |

I checked and yes, they are just a little larger than the diameter of the screw thread.
They say VW on one side and K17 Hella on the other.

I appreciate the pics as i allways thought there was a seal there but my bus came in boxes so thats why i asked. The 56 I had didn't have the lense in there since your bus is the same color as mine sealing wax red ha. I have really clear picture of what i need to do and clearifys that not all busses had that lense seal on there. Where there clips or screws holding that license light on? _________________

I have seen accessory lights but not the type you describe above. Please post a photo. _________________ How to Post Photos

I found the base from it. It had a light inside+ a bulb holder and wire extension for the trouble shooting light. I removed it from a 57 bus that had been sitting in a field since 65 at least thats what the plates said. I'll have to digf through some boxes of parts to find the rest of it but its here somewhere its a really neat hella item.

Here's a slightly different 57-58 lens for flat decklids. This one has the logos stacked in the center rather than at the sides. It comes from a May of '57 bus so possibly an early version of this lens.

I found the license lense in the classifieds for my '58. Like Joshua, I'm curious if anyone knows a supplier for the seal. I'm extremely tempted to take the dremel to my decklid so the '59 lens and seal will fit for a fraction of the cost! Plus, parts are readily available. |

So the ‘Hella’ version is 1953-1957, we think
What years is the ‘~~~ Hella K1424’ version correct for?
Doug’s old ad says 1954/55
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1457170
I also have one lens that is totally plain (top)
I’d like to know for sure which one is right for my Feb ‘55 _________________ -StockRocks- |

Here is a SWF and VW K12828 marked one. I have usually seen Hella lenses in the past, not sure if this is for a certain year or just a time frame where a second source was needed to keep up with current demand. I doubt it was a replacement since it has the VW logo but who knows…
