Do you really get a new VIN # when importing?

From my experience with a Japanese made Isuzu in Costa Rica and an Indian made Ford Ecosport in Bermuda, I can say that VINs used in parts of the world outside the USA do not conform to the US versions!

Therefore I can believe that the US DOT would require a new VIN to fit their standard.

Some vehicles will have a 17 digit vin that conforms to the US vin system, other vehicles do not.

For example japanese imports do not have a 17 digit vin, and when you do manage to get one legally imported it gets an assigned vin.

Ditto, my Land cruiser came into Vancouver through customs. I wonder if it's vehicle specific ... Or country of origin specific. Would be best to contact customs to inquire in your own country.
