I use a big shop-vac on my foundry. The flow is controlled by a gate valve. The whole thing looks pretty jerry-rigged and I am planning on neatening everthing up, but it works great! I really like the radio trim plate.
What do you all use for casting sand? Do you make your own with sand and kitty litter or is it available nearby? |
Cru62, I made my own sand its sand blasting silica sand very very fine cleaned and dry. I can't think of grit size but the finest they had some call it sugar sand 100# bags about $6.00 . As far as the bentonite I bought a100# bag of powder of ebay cost more to ship then the powder its self. I also find the sand get better with time or maybe one learns just how much water to add and how much not to add. It does take sometime to get it right. Look up Myfordboy on youtube hes one of the best or go to AlloyAvenue network very good infor. there _________________ My 59 panel plus 36hp valve covers http://s122.photobucket.com/albums/o265/faster50/59%20panel/ |

Thanks for the tips on making sand. I got some sand that is perfect from work. And we have Bentonite powder as well! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Ask the wife for bentonite, it's used in face masks an stuff like that.. Wear a mask it's not the best for the lungs either! _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

that silica will lodge in your lungs and cause you to develop cancer.
My engineering professor was really crazy about that stuff. We had laths and end mill running and he was most concerned on that stuff.
I hated it, it also gets into the air very easily and dries out your hands. _________________ '59 typ1 rajay turbo

Do I know about loosing a 4 legged friend. My Kasmier suffered from a stroke on oct 8. last year at the age of 14 years and 7 months. Had to take him to the vet and put him to sleep. That was a tough drive! Even now a good 6 months later I sometimes catch myself in doing the "where is he" look around.
Oh well, life goes on.
Back to the foundry thang. Sure like the progress.

Mark I've been working on the house just had a new roof put on and now I'm almost finished replacing over 200 ft. of fascia board and painting. Its 40 years old and needed it. As soon as I get this finished I'll start casting again have some ideas for making cores for the fins on the oil cooler that shoulded be that hard to make. Earlier this year I started making a pattern for a horn tank for the 41 schwinn just for fun still need to add some fins and something cool but its a start. And did get alittle more done on the 59.
And heres a very long weld on the 59.
This is what you get when you spray a blasted case with chromic acid.

I just ran across a web site that offers 3D printing for prototyping and pattern making in a variety of materials.........very reasonably priced too! I think the site is shapeways.com if you want to have a look. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

I alodine most all of my cases&parts that need it, even the potmetel die cast valve covers that corode while you look at them. I have many years on my cb covers and some empi&noname ones that look great.
I might need to get you to make me a pair of fined simeise cylinders I can put some big sleaves into.or i may just do billet, but thats expensive getting that size billet.
I know about the homework,Im almost done with mine.....I think&hope. |

if you had an old case it probably wouldent be hard to make a mold & pop iff some light plastic or glass or whatever if you just wanted a lightweight copy of it. |

I just thought you folks might like to see a pair of Racer Valve Covers in use. Manu Thuiliier had a pair on the SSS36 engine in his "Around the World" three times Paul Loof 55 Beetle. When he stopped by my house on his way to Bonneville this year, a set of Jeff Denham heads were waiting to be installed. This neat fish eye lens photo was taken by Sam Crump at www.facebook.com/DancingwolfPhotography and displays the Racer Valve Covers perfectly waiting to be refitted.

I just watched the video Once More The story of VIN 903847 what a great story. And have to say it make me very proud to know that my covers are on a car with all that history its just a great filling. Keep up all the great work Manu & all that have been a part of it and thanks for the picture. Rob
snowbug the long weld was just one spot at a time. _________________ My 59 panel plus 36hp valve covers http://s122.photobucket.com/albums/o265/faster50/59%20panel/ |

I know Manu personally. Lives close to my parents cottage. I have heard of using a wet paper mulch on either sides of the weld to stop warping. I have used a wet rag before. Jim |
