I fixed the full throttle switch on my 83 that was missing its tabs. i found wires hanging in the engine compartment that weren't attached to anything and it led me to realize that they didn't have anywhere to connect to. i guess people had broke them off inadvertently while fooling with the air cleaner box and air boot. VW jambed a bunch of stuff together right there...silly germans.
I was wary of soldering the old connection points for fear of melting the internal parts of the switch. I got lucky and found a tap and two screws to match from one of my screw hordes. I needed to file the screw down so that it wouldn't bottom out in the switch but I was stoked to find there is about a 1/4 inch of brass rivet there to tap and it held the screw well. I flattened a male connector crimp end and drilled a hole in it for the screw.

It was a good weekend on the syncro. We retro fitted a custom bumper (from previous owner) with a 2" tow hitch to haul bikes, a scooter hauler and such. Pulled it off, scuffed it, cut the 2" receiver to size, welded it on and painted it. I also replaced the stereo-to-amp cable so I could actually hear my jams.

I rotated the tires the other day and noticed my left front was wearing more on the inside edge. I took it in and had the camber and toe in adjusted today. |

I decided to take out the windshield to see what was going on in the lower passenger corner where I was seeing rust. I wish I had left it alone for the moment, because it took over the last few days! I had to half ass the repair, as I don't weld, but this should hold me over for a year or two...

|

Finally took my driver door apart to poke around. Turns out that the fiber pad was missing (later found it down below in the drain area in the bottom of the door).
Issue: Driver window was rocking back and forth making a clunking sound when stoping, accelerating, or putting your arm down on it. (rather annoying)
Fix: While some of this could be related to the whole window armature, in my case it was a simple matter of replacing the felt pad in the door frame.
Here are some pictures:
reference picture. the pad is *not* the white one, it's above that.
Here is a closeup of the felt pad in place. It is above the white styrofoam pad.

Woke up my '85 Westy yesterday from it's slumber on the street. A quick battery charge (came up to 100%... good battery) and she woke up with authority.
Did a few tasks that have been bothering me for a long time.
Repaired the vent window on the Driver's side. Simple. Figured out why the OEM Blaupunkt speaker on the driver side didn't work - the speaker wire was snipped in two.
And the best thing - added sound deadening to both drivers and passengers doors. Now when you close them, not more tinny "clink" when you close the doors, but a more authoritative Benz like "thunk".
It should really help with road noise - not that it is a big problem...
Now to fix that pesky oil leak... it is always something. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia |

Got Scooby back on the road today after nearly 2 mths. The specialists fixed it by adding 2 one way valves into the fuel injection line. The pump itself was fine, it was just that the fuel was draining backward. I don't understand it so I might not be explaining it correctly. The bill was reasonable too. Now have to get used to driving that monolith again and different shifting patterns. Happiness is having it functional again. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Took delivery on a vanagon today, she has been making her way across the US on the back of a truck for the last week.
87 syncro, tin top that was converted to a pop top.
Oh so much to do, but for now just need to get familiar with her squeaks and groans and get her to pass CA smog.
The list:
1.8T over at Stephans and all the bells and whistles that go with it.
Better brakes!!!
A/C (cause it is hot out here in CA I am learning)
Propex heater for the mountains in winter
And everything else that comes up as those are completed.
Oh the fun is only beginning!! |

yep...did the same to the passenger side rear window changing to the "vented window". Found some cancer that was not visible...destroyed a Sunday Afternoon and a night waiting for the paint to dry properly to put the window back in by myself. What sucks is I started a new job Monday morning and trying to stay awake was a challenge! What sucks even more is I just sold off some window frames which I could have used to do the repair! |
