What to do - Type 4 - engine tin missing

Just bought a type 4 1800 - engine. With bad or missing engine tins.

It seems a little hard to locate some tins in good shape. I reade about the upright conversion - and thought that could some of my challenges.

Would you recommned that I stay on the original tins or?

Any good pics outthere that shows the complete engine tins?

I like the Type 4, so my opinion is slightly biased. You can find several pictures of the tins you are missing using the Photo Gallery and also the Classifieds, but getting the actual name or correct part number for each piece can be confusing.

It has been my experience that the two most difficult pieces to locate for the Type 4 are the bottom two that go below the pushrod tubes, but not impossible to find. Regardless, both the Type 1 upright and the Type 4 pancake need all their tin, so converting to the Type 1 might not solve all of your problems anyway.

There is literally a bus full of tin at the VW junkyard where I go.

If you go with an upright cooling system you will become dependent on a heavily loaded fan belt. One of the things I like about the T4 is that the fan is going to keep turning so long as the crank does. Yes there is still a belt to drive the alternator, but it is very lightly loaded and will last for a couple hundred thousand miles with very infrequent adjustments, and when and if it does fail you can still drive a hundred or more miles without the alternator until you can get a new belt.

Humbly said - if that is as used engine you may have a lot more going on in that engine than just missing tins. Borrow a bore scope and look inside the cylinders to see what they look like. Check the valves with the rockers off to be sure they are even. Drain the oil and check for bits of metal. Do not tighten the oil strainer bolt more than 9 ft lbs or it will break.

If it is a new engine who is the engine builder?

Tins can be bought easily out of classifieds. For every engine that becomes scrap there is a tin set left over. You should be able to buy a whole set cheaper than piece by piece.

First off what is your current or planned exhaust setup?

The picture above is tin specific to the stock 75-78 exhaust system.

If you are going with the 72-74 style heater boxes and trapezoid shaped exhaust flanges part numbers 9, 20, 21, 27, 32, and 01 will be different.

Also not pictured will be the heat riser tubes from the forward side of the heater boxes, and the riser from the engine bay to the right side heater box. those parts are specific to the exhaust style.

Once you know what exhaust, then you can proceed to figure out which pieces you need

the parts won't be listed in classifieds under VW part numbers. I have never seen a NOS set come up. Most pieces are bent a little, dirty, and have cracks in them.

My suggestion is make a decision what year engine you are going to run and then continue this thread trying to find each piece or a set. Also if you change carbs or FI that may change what you need/can use too.

looks like 73. Do you have the big fan casting?
almost easier to identify what you have vers what you need.

Looks like you have front tin w- warm air hole for preheat, but no tube for that. see an oil cooler piece there, bottom tins, under cylinder tins- top cylinder tins-

your off to a good start.

Well, if you post in an old dead thread, some people complain. If you post a new thread, people say "why don't you do a search, dummy"?

So, here goes:

Yeah, building my first Type 4 for a dune buggy. (I'vd built many Type 1's.) I've got the long block built, but have no cooling tin. Does anyone have a pic of what tin I need to search for please? Just what I need for a dune buggy installation, not all the extras for a van or other install.

Add: I have the large aluminum fan shroud and fan, just need to know what tin to look for to wrap it up.

Well done!

You'll need the 2 large top pieces (you can trim off the outer flanges that meet up with the sides of the engine compartment for buggy use) (1&3 on fiche).

The 2 under the cylinders (10 fiche) as well as the rear deflectors (27 & 36) shown below, you likely don't need the flat rectangles (20 & 21) since you probably don't run heat exchangers:

And you'll need the deflectors at the front as well (32 & 33):

Yeah, on Type 1 VW's that aren't running a skid plate, I do use the tin under the cylinders to protect the pushrod tubes. But on this Type 4, my exhaust header runs down out of there. Fabbing a skid plate to protect that area is going to be interesting...

Now to find the tin. Any ideas there?

Sometimes I really wonder whatever possessed me to go with a Type 4 this time....

And, while I've got you, will a Melling type long gear oil pump fit behind the fan shround on a Type 4??

I've never heard of anyone having shroud clearance issues, but many complain of the way it fits loose in the case.

The mystery part in the top pic goes between the alternator and it's pulley, but it's not needed if there's no engine compartment.
