Love that shade of yellow, and beautiful car aswell. Wish I could convince my girlfriend to let me do oriole yellow or savannah beige. I even said "but yellow would match the headlights" she will have no part of it. |

Here is my Savanna Beige treasure.
For some reason this seems to be the
hardest color to replicate. It washes out
on almost all the photos I have taken. _________________ 67 Ghia Cabriolet |

I toyed around with the idea of a painted dash as well - and I LIKE the idea. However, I found that to make it look the way I wanted, I'd have to plug quite a fez holes near the dash pad. The holes peek out from under the pad. There are quite a few other holes that would need to be plugged up as well. To my taste, it would really have take a lot work to get it where I wanted.
I finally opted for the woodgrain and never looked back. Get a decent quality face and take your time to apply it, it looks sharp. |
About to strip mine down and paint also. One Idea if you prefer the woodgrain look, is to have it hydro-dipped. unlimited woodgrain patterns, colors. Or any look of Aluminum or steel, etc. It's very inexpensive , and can hold up better than the original. I did mine myself. _________________ 1970 Ghia vert.

Agree with all these guys. Painted looks so much cleaner but all the slots and holes that need to be welded up is a chore. |
Does anyone know why they put all those slots in the dash in the first place? I've never understood their purpose, especially given that VW just covered them with the vinyl face. _________________ Currently own:

I read somewhere that it makes bending the dash easier? Also maybe some slight weight reduction? And makes it only half strong if you decide to hit your head with speed on the dash pad? Only thoughts.
I also had mine painted and welded some of the slots/holes, but I will be using the upper dash pad and lower knee pads though. Welding up ALL of the holes (to be able to do without any pads) is a huge task for the later models. _________________ Vlad's 72 Ghia (Once in a Lifetime Restoration topic)
