I remember reading on this forum a year or so ago that the color was olive green for both the pan and motor tin.
I can not recall who posted the info however.

(Damn the mind is the first to go.)

Someone back me up.

The color is very hard to photograph, but my '47s engine tin & pan are finished in a matte Olive Drab color. It was matched to the original color using the backside of the head tins which were in perfect condition

the pan on my friends 47 bug is a olive green but seems more satin than flat like us military vehicles are. it is way more green looking than the cylinder tins posted above

Check out Mark Merril's (username "qwerty") '46 resto pics thread. I think it is a flat olive green.

My 47(sold to Us army exchage)engines tin and frame were black satin. The pan/ tin had never been repainted. A freinds 46 had a green paint on the pan and some of the engine tin.
I think back then vw used what ever paint ther could get there hands on.

As far as I can glean, my US '47 would have originally had a satin black pan and tinware. I was always under the impression, just by taking note of early cars over the years, that '45- early '47 used the Olive Green colour and black was used thereafter.

My Oct/Nov 47 had the green floorpan, not sure I would call it olive green but a drab dark green. We eye matched the color from an area where the pan bolted to the body that had not been exposed to light or weather. Interestingly I obtained engine tin from a 47 motor from another vehicle and the colour was the same as my pan. It was not high gloss but reasonably shiny, definatly not flat. We flattened the paint to match.

My November 1947 pan was gray and so was the engine tin. we found it under the belly gasket and under the grease ahead of the trans and under the gas tank. I have some photos if you want to see. this was a CCG Army car delivered 12/5/1947.

Dragging up an old thread but I finally have room to start working on my 47 Very Happy

Looking more closely under the pan rubber you can clearly see the original grey paint which also matches the paint inside the fan housing...any views on whether the front beam, rear axles, lever shocks etc should be black or matching grey ?

It's a civilian car in black originally, sold through the Schultz dealer in Essen.

Thanks
Kev
