Our van is named "Manggo" -- which is perhaps aspirational as at low moments another yellow fruit suggests itself as more appropriate.
Have decided that we will no longer call her struggles breakdowns or mechanical challenges.
The "new black" is "restoration opportunities" and they aren't shy about showing up. . .
May you meet your restoration opportunities with grace, humor and an explanation for why your kids won't go to college. . . |

Meet Chester, because he reminds my wife of a Molester van.

My first 79 was named when some drunk guy stumbled out of the bar and said "Man, that van is Boss !" It didn't seem right calling this one "The Boss"
I think it'll either be called "Colonel Klunk" or "EKNOLDGE" ( Econolodge )
I haven't settled on one yet.

My memory is so bad that I can't remember if I've replied to this thread already!
Limey
So called as he was bought to work in a Lime Quarry in Germany. He was covered in Lime - stained into the paint! when I bought him and there is still plenty inside the chassis rails. I can't get it out!
Skogen
So called as he was used by the Swedish Forestry Commission for the first 10 years of his life. Skogen means 'Forest' in Sweden. The letters are still visible on the doors where the stickers were.
Sid
He's a Syncro 14 RHD Single Cab. I took this photo when I was planning on running him as my daily with an Audi 4.2 V8 Syncro 16 spec.
He's now owned by a good friend and used regularly as one of the Busfest Syncro demonstration vans and runs a Subaru 2.5 SOHC.
'Da Van' or Harlequin
I can't find a photo at present but this was my first Syncro conversion. A White 1986 2WD Doka which I converted to Syncro and used different coloured panels and a bright green Henrymag rear canopy.
My other vans don't have names yet but they probably will with time. They only tend to get names as I drive them and discover more about their history or I'm just spending time working on them day to day.

This is our new van, "Nelson Vandella" nice and rust free from a garage in Arizona. Previous owner named him so we decided to roll with it.

I had once called my van syncrobu but never did like it. I should have known to just wait and the vans true nature would reveal itself. So as the list of generally unwilling donors of parts grows a name came to me.

I don't know that my wallet ever looked like the one on top, but man it sure looks like the one on the bottom now!
We're still tossing a few names around...
- Tortuga (as in Tortuga HQ. My kids are big Wild Kratts fans).
- Turbotuga, or occasionally just turbo or tuga for short. Sort of goes with the first name.
- Terrapin (or Terra for short). I like this one, as I'm a big Grateful Dead fan, but the wife doesn't care for it. Something about being too close to terrible, but you know there are times you just want to call it that, right?
I'm partial to Turbotuga, but we'll give it some time and see what sticks. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Go with what the kids want - it will mean more to them. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

That's true. I'll just call it the smoldering remains of any spare money or time I used to have. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...
