I was given four sets of 3.88 Gleason ring & pinions which I'm assured were from four Super Beetle transaxles. Problem is, the owner didn't mark or keep the r&p pair together for each set and they're the late ones without the identifying numbers on each other than the gear ratio.

I want to run them in a race gearbox, but what would happen if I mix and match pinions with a ring gear of the same ratio from another set? Just noise or might there be destruction? Idea

I have done this In my drag car. Couldn't tell if the ring and pinion were whinning or not, it's too noisey in the car. When I rebuilt the tranny after a full season of usage, I could not find any problems with the gear set. I would not do this in a street car.
If you set the backlash correctly, it should be fine.

There are no transaxle parts that are exclusive to only a Super Beetle transaxle. The 3.88 R&P gears were used in several different vehicles.

It will work but they could be very noisy and wear out a little sooner. If set up correctly with the pinion depths and backlash they won't just self destruct. Gene Berg has some very detailed instructions about building a racing transaxle and hand lapping the R&P gear in his "Blue Book"

I have done this several times. Look at the color of the gears and match as good as possible. Then run pattern and get it a close as possible. Set you back lash as tight as possible and RUN THEM!!! Most of the time they won't even whine.

Drag racing I don't see a problem mixing R+P as they don't ware out they break.

@ Ray just realized I never got back to you on the lash caps, If you still interested them let me know.

As mentioned earlier, not the beat way to go foo a street car. However, use your own method of visualizing the wear pattern (machinist dye etc), and you should be good to go.
