Last year when I put my new rebuild into my bus I had to pull it because I had a bad spark plug thread. Got that fixed had the engine back in and was driving it a few days when my rebuild alternator quit. Turned out it had a loose screw in the back end of the alternator that grounded it internally. Had to pull the alternator again to fix it. I was lucky the 36mm nut having just been installed came right off. But I did not try that until I had already taken the the fuel pump and alternator stand off. The nice thing about dual carbs is not having to mess with the manifold and carb. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

When it goes back in. Don't mount the fan on it until it' installed. That way it's simple it will go right in behind the manifold with the generator stand in place.
You will just first set the fan inside the shroud but not mounted until the generator with the attached backing plate is bolted in. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Okay got the genorator all back in and everything all hooked up. Started it and the damned genorator light was on. We straight wired the regulator to the genorator and it wasn't charging for some reason. Took the top of the regulator and manually closed the points in it and the light turned off. But took th + side of battery off and it died. I'm so confused! Checked the other genorator on the bench and it worked fine!!! _________________ 1973 karmann ghia - current, not the last VW.

I unplug the genorator light on the dash and that means it's charging "out of sight out of mind"?
im going to take the regulator up to the auto parts store so they can test it or replace it. The genorator wasn't making a motor in the car but it did out. So I was thinking bad ground,made a straight ground, but lights still on. I'm going to check for volts when I get back. Just to rule something out, where do the wires on the relay next to the volt regulator go to?
I haven't messed with the wiring Much on this thing but I probably need too.

Did you go through the proper polarizing procedure after you installed the new generator?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you didn't.
Just do a search here for "polarizing generator". |

Time to go back to basic's, There has to be something your missing!
If it motors strong then it should charge.
Remember a VW Bosch generator goes to full charge when you ground the field. An alternator goes to full charge with Positive applied to the Armature.
VW's Bosch Generators produce their power in the Armature so the battery charging current they make goes through it's brushes where as Alternators produce their power in the field windings.
Generators need a relay to connect them to the battery after they start charging. (Actually more importantly to disconnect them so they don't drain the battery when the engine stops.) Alternators do not because the internal diodes isolate the battery from feeding back.
Generators don't need the generator light circuit to work like Alternators do.
VW Bosch Generators have the field connected to D+ at the other end. Alternators connect the field to ground (through the diodes) at the other end.
Check your battery cables and your ground cables again. Account for every wire. Account for every circuit. (The only ground in the VW Bosch Generator is at a brush) make sure that when you lift that brush that D+ and DF open to ground when read to ground with the ohm meter.)
(What's happening is inside the generators voltage regulator there is a relay contact between (D+ to B+) It is not closed yet, and there is a wire wound resistor between (DF and Ground) this starts it charging when the magnetic field that is resident in the armature starts to generate a current because the field is excited through the wire wound resistor by the current generated in the armature which is connected to the filed windings and D+. Really there are only 2 circuits that need to be good for a generator to work! The armature circuit: (D+ to brush to commutator to armature to commutator to brush to ground). The other, The field circuit: D+ to field windings to DF. Check them with ohm meter. They should only measure a few ohms each with the field circuit probably reading higher than the armature circuit. I don't know I haven't check that but will tomorrow and let you know what my generator reads.)

Hmmmmm I didn't sand the paint off of the d- for the ground, ill do that even though I dont think that's it. I've checked the grounding strap I'll check the ground comming from the battery tomorrow, I replaced a small piece of burned wire going to theat relay, I don't know what it does but it's connected to the d+ side of the battery, I'll make sure that relay is grounded even though I'm not sure of its purpos and know it's not the problem. This last time I didn't take the belt off to polorize the genorator ( I'm kind of tired of it) so I'm not sure if it was spinning again, certainly didn't move the belt. Aaaand I don't get what else it could be. I don't get how when we tested the old gen in the car it didn't spin, but when we took it out it was powerful enough to be a side grinder. So: Without the voltage regulator connected and the belt off the generator.
D+ to DF measures 4 ohms
and
