I'm in the process of separating the body from the floor pan. All bolts are removed, wiring to the motor, etc. I can easily lift the rear of the body. Only thing that hasn't be disconnected is the speedo cable and brake lines to the master cylinder and the tie rod ends. I've followed this tutorial to a T.

http://www.superbeetles.com/Tech_talk/jun.htm

My question is this. Why is it necessary to disconnect the tie rod ends? Any input is appreciated...

Also, does anybody know of any other tutorials, pics of the super beetle body removal?

In a Super Beetle, the steering box and idler arm bracket are bolted to the left and right front quarter panels, respectively. In that tutorial, they separate the steering system from the front suspension at the tie rod ends, and they unbolt the steering damper, leaving the steering components bolted to the quarter panels (body) and the suspension bolted to the frame head (chassis). Alternatively, you can unbolt the steering components from the body and the steering column, leaving them connected to the suspension and frame head as you raise the body. You have a few options on where to separate those front end components. When you finally start to raise the front end, have someone check that area to make sure that nothing gets hung up.

The Volkswagen Super Beetle Handbook shows it fairly well.

Also, you have probably already done this, but make sure you support the Super Beetle frame head on a jack stand before you separate the body from the chassis.

Do you have the cart built for the body that you can roll the chassis underneath?

Not yet..I've been looking at some of the designs that people have come up with, but haven't settled on anything yet...I'm not terribly limited for space, but the idea of storing the chassis underneath the body is appealing...
