|
|
Hey all-
I am having a problem with the install of my exterior LED kit that is baffling me. I swapped all bulbs and changed the relay and after doing so everything works, except the front parking lights no longer come on, and in the rear of the van, the turn signal lights come on with the tail lights (which I don't think is correct?). When hazards or turn signals are engaged they work. If I switch back to the old bulbs and relay, I have running lights up front, the rear turn signal indicators no longer come on with the tail light and things are mostly back to normal. What could be going on here?
This has gone from 15 minute project to serious time-suck!
Here is a photo of the rear with headlights in on position:

At this point I have double checked everything and am throwing in the towel. The only thing I can think of is that this relay is somehow incorrectly wires internally. I'll email Go Westy and see if they have any thoughts. _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

Will do- though I'm sure this is either a random bad part or a bizarro-world quirk of my van, and not a systemic issue with the kits. But it sure is a head scratcher! _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

I had similar problems when I installed my LED's .
I found a trailer wire harness tucked up in the bumper from the pervious owner and once I removed that everything was fine. |

Van Cafe sell these kits (or similar) in two versions - big and small. The small kit does not include the rear turn signal bulb as it requires a special front turn/parking bulb to make both operate - the big kit includes both. The Go Westy site includes some fitment and function notes for their LED kits but it doesn't mention this issue so I am not sure it is the same.
I recently bought the Van Cafe brake light LED's, dash light LED's and interior LED's but couldn't justify the cost of the full kit! |

From memories of past threads my money's on a trailer harness relay too.
From the led kit write up on the GW website:
Quote: |
Function note #2: Many non-powered trailer wiring converters are not compatible with LED tail light bulbs. If you are experiencing both rear turn signals flashing concurrently, along with your rear running lights illuminating dimly, or other tail light oddities, the issue is likely a bad converter. The converter we sell has proven to work reliably. Alternatively, any powered style converter should be compatible. |

+1 on an incompatible trailer harness. It's probably been zip-tied out of the way under the deck lid by a previous owner.

"resistance is futile"...
my 88 Wolfsburg Weekender came to me with some interesting DPO electrical "mods". The least of which was not one but TWO trailer wiring converters hacked into the rear tail light wiring. |
