Charging problem..

Just took the generator out again, and did the simple motor test, not much of a spin. I don't get it. I guess I will have it replaced. Also the gen and the fan had a tragic 3 foot fall, I hope we got it straightened out right even though I'm sure when we put it in and crank it it will wake the dreaded noise.

The generator won't turn the engine when being polarized, you have to take the belt off. Make sure your brushes are sliding easily in the holders so that they are making good contact with the armature under spring pressure.

Finally, if there is a break in the wire to the gen light it will be on...the light is wired between B+ and gen output, so either side being low will light the gen light,

Update. So, took the generator up to a starter and alternator shop they tested it, and the folks at Bosch in Mexico wired it backwards. It was feeding volts back.. The dude at the shop fixed it( even though he was told not to because it has a warranty) so now it works as it should and we don't have to worry about getting another bad gen I guess.

I'm going to put it back it the car tomorrow and see how it goes, hopefully my new regulator is alright.

Some advice - take your old generator to a shop to get it repaired, save time, money, and afew headaches.

That would explain some things! That is a bit of a loop to throw at us! Never have seen that on one, I am surprised the shop caught it! So like the fields were back to back? Kind of equivalent to putting one battery in backwards in a 2 battery flashlight!

Yes, strange indeed! I'll probably straight wire it tomorrow to make sure it's all good. Then I will make sure my old wires in the harness are alright.

All I can hope for now is that my fan doesn't make a noise. Fingers crossed that that dreadful red light doesn't come on either.

Wonder how many bad ones got out before someone caught the problem?

Problem resolved, no noise, no light, wires are good.
