Thanks, Jonathan. That's the plan, the seals will all get changed, correct muffler. Tin needs restored...etc. I'll get with you down the road when I do the harness to see how you incorporated the flasher. I may take a run down to Dothan one day to check it out if that's alright. It'll be a while though. I'm just below Macon, GA so not too far away.

November 10th-
Picked up a sandblast cabinet today at HF AND 50 pounds of glass media. Blasted the rear apron and it turned out quite nice. Went ahead and removed the fan shroud and will blast it on Tuesday. Gonna pick up some self etching primer for these pieces. The lower cylinder discharge tin needs a little metal work that I'll take care of when I get it out. If you look close, you can see the fan shroud is in the cabinet now.

The motor is filthy. I cleaned a little bit this afternoon...a little. Found a mouse's nest, fortunately no mice!

Well, between work and the temperatures dropping to near freezing, my work on the engine tin has ground to a halt. Speaking of grinding, I did notice a bit of Bondo on the door sill. Though I can see metal all around it, the carpet retainer is gone except for a few jagged pieces. I ordered the right and left sill replacements from Airhead and the came in today.

Figured I'd grind awY some of the Bondo and see how big a patch I have to make.

Holy crap! That's not a little Bondo!

Good news is the replacement pieces will cover this and the heater tube itself is intact

Today, I removed more Bondo from the Grand Canyon, otherwise known as the passenger door sill.

And this Ladies and Germs, is why we do not wear rings/jewelry while doing any kind of maintenance.

I had to clamp my finger in a vice to un-squash the ring enough to get it off my finger. Definetely not comfortable and a rookie move on my part. I have no excuse, I preach at my crew all day every day about this very thing.

Ok... Un-solicited question.. With UR engine torn down that far and you not really knowing the bottom end condition, why not split the case, inspect, machine if needed and KNOW you'll have a reliable new motor?

I bought my 69 and didn't know the engine condition. The previous owner didn't know either but said it ran well, which it did. Someone clearly had done a top end on it before. I had the engine out to reseal it and said screw it and tore it all apart. Good thing I did. Two of the mains were worn thru the bearing material along with two of the connecting rod bearings. I knew this bug was going to be a long time keeper. I caught it just in time and the case and crank required no machining.

Just a thought

I'll take that into consideration. I've checked The following to this point.
1. Rod end play is .012" with an upper limit of .0156".
2. Lifters/pushrods were out of spec at 14.94mm- being replaced
3. Crankshaft end play at .005" right at the upper limit.
4. New Pistons/jugs coming
5. Rebuilt cylinder heads in the works
6. New pushrod tubes coming.

Now that the motor is clean, I'll delve deeper into measurements. I've not ruled out a full overhaul entirely.
Things to check next before I split the case will be:
1. Main bearing clearance
2. Oil pump end play and gear backlash

Like I said. I'll take it into consideration. In for a penny so to speak.

Like I said, just a thought. I've been on this site for 10 years. I've read so many posts where people didn't check the bottom end. They then installed new jugs/pistons and rebuilt heads. They then were posting questions asking why they suddenly had a "knocking" noise from their fresh top end job.
Yup, their low compression hid the worn rod bearings which the good compression showed.

Another weekend down the tubes, but! It was a productive one on the little Moroccan bug. The engine is clean and is that a hint of gold? Haha, I don't want to go there.

Front main seal came out in pieces, yeah it was that hard. There is still gray paint on the case where that was...interesting.

And the dang distributor drive gear slipped out and turned on me. So I realigned it to correct orientation for number 1 firing

Wow, someone should make this a "sticky" for how to remove the fan nut without pulling the engine. Laughing

Okay, I split the case. Shocked

There is a very slight discoloration to the main bearing journal where the oil passage on the bearing is and whatever ridge there was, rubbed off with my finger. I took some initial measurements of the number 1-3 main bearing bores and they are at 60.02mm with the normal range being 60.000 to 60.019mm (so close!). Number 4 main bearing bore check at 50.02 with a range of 50.000-50.025mm. The crankshaft appears to measure at stock size and main bearings are stock as well. I'll remove rods and rod bearings tomorrow and recheck everything.

What I need to do is: retorque the case and retake measurements. I ran out of time this morning and did these measurements in 15 minutes. I've also got a call in to Gary at RIMCO, to see what our options are. I've heard good things about them when it comes to 36hp motors. Thanks wcfvw69 and spanky324 for the advice. It really was a no-brainer when I saw that number 3 cylinder pushrod. Same connecting rod has slightly more end-play that the other three rods. It measured at .013" while the others were .010" and .011". Not a lot, but if I'm gonna do it, I might as well balance and blueprint the thing and do it right.
