Is this normal or is it some kind of oil pan extension? It looks to be hanging awfully low.

It's an after-market deep sump. Adds more oil for the engine to use and some even have additional filtration.

Get rid of it , and while you are under there get the rest of your engine tin in place.

After you remove it, buy these http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113198031SI

As you see on your car, ALL the paper drain plate gaskets leak. I tried them all. I greased them, sealed them and they still leaked. I have these on my VW's now and no leaks at all.

Gotcha. I already ordered the gaskets and a new strainer for the oil pan. But what do you mean by getting the rest of my engine tin in place? I'm a newbie here so I can use all of the advice I can get.

Thanks.

Here's another good picture of the tin.

Since we do not know what mismash of tin you have or do not have, it would help to post good detailed images of engine in question.

Missing #7 lower right rear sled tin.

Ok. I plan on putting it up on jack stands tomorrow so I'll get detailed pics of the underside of the engine and the topside as well.

And lower left #6 too?

Those two tabs you see poking inwards from your heat exchanger box ( big tubular looking thing) should be screwed together into the missing tin.

The tin directs the airflow around the motor and stops it from melting. It's important, yet deceptively simple looking.

You likely will need #5 as well. It often goes missing. There are two of them. One for each side.

Filtration, Gracey? Nope.

Nothing at all. And it may be there for a reason. But he didn't tell us anything about his engine.

Take everything you read here (or anywhere on the internet) as potentially incorrect.

We won't get into the contentious issue of whether adding an extra 1.5 quarts of oil will aid cooling or just add to the time the oil will get to its normal running temperature. Be that running hot or running at a normal temperature. Wink

I got called out of town but will be back in town tomorrow. I'm planning on putting the car up on jacks and getting some detailed pictures of the engine top to bottom. That should spark some debate! Very Happy

Seroiusly, I'm hoping that you guys can help me figure out just exactly what cooling tin is missing.

thanks,
Steve

From the one picture you've shown, you are missing the right-side "sled" (#2 from the diagram).

Show us more.
