Engin case "three dots" ????

Sorry I have tried to find this on the samba. But what are the three dots in the circle represent on the back of a VW case. One side they are up the other sideways. Just got a case and have not seen this before?
Do you have any idea what they are for?

It is a casting mark having to do with something about the mold.
Maybe what time if day it was made, maybe what number it was in a series. Or most likely it indicates what type of sandwich was had for lunch that day.
I believe that one indicates ham sandwich
